Exhaust over tranny crossmember...

Well as we all know with certain long tubes the tranny crossmember gets in the way of routing the exhaust pipe straight back on the driver side of our trucks. Im finally getting around to running my exhaust and was wanting to know if something like the hedman x-tension would work for this problem? I know a muffler shop could make something up pretty easy but I was wanting to try and build my own exhaust.

This is the piping I was talking about: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HED-18806/

Re: Exhaust over tranny crossmember...

The problem is the crossmember. The drivers side is where the catalytic converter went. If you use this crossmember, you end up with his awkward bend right after the collector, which kind of defeats the purpose of headers and improved flow.

Fortunately, trucks that did not have catalytic converters have a crossmember that is symmetrical and does not get in the way of headers. Imagine one that looks like the passenger side on both sides.

Your best bet is to try and find one of these in a junkyard, buy an aftermarket one, or modify/make something. It's so much easier to run the pipes this way as it's a straight shot from the collector back.

I've always wondered if you could take two of the emissions style ones, cut out the passenger sides and weld them back up to make a new one. Never needed to try it but it's an idea I had.

Re: Exhaust over tranny crossmember...

Next time you go by Pick' n Pull or Dismantlers get one. I got one about a month ago just for the header problem. During the half price sale it was like 15 bucks at Pick' n Pull and I figured that was just fine to make my exhaust problems go away. Should be on all 73-76 1/2 tons and up to 79 HD trucks with factory non-emissions exhaust. Definitely worth the $$$$.

Re: Exhaust over tranny crossmember...

I've been on the lookout for a double hump crossmember for a few months now, been several times and so far nothing. Was hoping the link i posted would get me around having to track down a crossmember or take it to a muffler shop.

I seem to remember insidious 86 fabbing up something similar.

When pyro said that the stock one could be cut and half and welded together with another stock one he is right. From the middle (where the mount is) to the passenger side is exactly like a double hump. Stocks are pretty easy to find so you could just grab one and fab up a new crossmember. Someone on this board did it once (saw it looking for pics of a double hump) I just cannot find the link now. That could always be another option.

Re: Exhaust over tranny crossmember...

I have one if the symmetrical crossmembers from a 74 and if you choose to graft to right sides together it needs to be exactly 33in over all width. Just thought I would let yall know.
