Whats nicer to have?

What's nicer to have restored a 64 Chevy c10 automatic or manual?

Re: Whats nicer to have?

I think that its personal preference....I prefer a manual. I have always enjoyed throwing gears and dont like/own autos. Just my 2 cents worth. I also think it depends on what the trucks used for, restoration or resto mod...alot of factors.

Re: Whats nicer to have?

"Nicer" also depends on whether it's original or modified. A untouched truck with an OEM automatic will have the highly sought after auto column which is hard to find and can be expensive, much like a big back window. But it's really a matter of what the owner prefers, versus wanting something with a higher potential selling price.

Personally I don't care for big back windows or automatics, but also realize they will probably bring more money to a collector.

Do automatics bring more $$? And what is better for hot rods?

Re: Whats nicer to have?

Still a matter of personel preferance, years back 4-speeds ruled, with the modern autos, autos rule, one reason is you can install a 7oor4, still have a very steep first gear plus overdrive, your rear gears say 3.73 would still have the out of the gate push but in overdrive your looking at a 3.08 gear for final ratio, thus way better milage, easier on the motor rpm wise if your on the road , you can get very expensive five and six speed sticks if you choose....

Re: Whats nicer to have?

I made mine a automatic for fuel economy (overdrive gear 700r4) and for resale, lots of folks cannot drive a std anymore so when and if I ever sell it, the automatic makes it easier to sell. jmo Kieth

Converted my old heap from a standard 3 speed to an auto powerglide.

Re: Whats nicer to have?

I like the extra driver involvement and control of a manual trans. When I bought my project truck the PO had it set up for an auto but I bought a Camaro T56 six speed to swap in. Automatics are just boring to me, just press the pedal and it does everything for you. So easy a caveman could do it. Plus I don't like stall converters one bit- you lose a ton of throttle response compared to the direct drive of a clutch and manual trans. The only time auto's are any good is when you're stuck in stop and go traffic for an hour. Sticks get better mileage, generally. Besides, it's way cooler to chirp second and third if you're coordinated enough to do it yourself!!

I've had both, but as I get older my knees prefer the auto.

Re: Whats nicer to have?

I prefer auto. I also like a/c power windows and locks. Getting old costs more money but it's more comfy.
