Steering Column problems

when putting my truck into Drive or Reverse or Nuetral it is very easy. almost too easy to put into gear. kinda looks like its coming out of gear when in Drive or Reverse. But the problem is when im in gear and wanting to put the truck in Park, it sometimes wont go into Park. so then ill have to put it in Nuetral and try again. Basically its very hard to put truck in Park, any suggestions? ive heard it might be the shifter linkage? or is it inside the column? either way i need help and need answers, thanks.

Re: Steering Column problems

Good info LockDoc...

I once had a similar problem on my truck and had to remove the column, take every thing apart and basically chisel old grease out of it. This hot Texas weather had dried up the grease until it made it extremely difficult to shift especially when pulling the lever towards me. I cleaned it all out with diesel and relubed.

Doesn't sound like this is the problem here but the posts that LockDoc sent may help isolating it.

Re: Steering Column problems

Before dismantling the column try some penetrate in and around the shifter where it goes into the column. Spray and work it a little a few times.

Re: Steering Column problems

Is the tip of the shift indicator broken? I had two different columns in two days with the same thing the pointer broke and then the indicator dropped down a bit, causing it to bind up going into park if it would go intop park at all. I know it sounds silly that a little piece of plastic can hold up the whole show like that but it didi I took a little dental hook tool [love them they have 1000's of uses] and dug out the pieces and then it was all freed up once again. That is something to look for that does'nt cost anything and won't cost anything to fix either, so it might be worth a look. Jim
