Just need to settle a dispute with a member about Goodmark products

Guys or gals-
I have recently just sold some Goodmark sheetmetal parts to a fellow member and he thought that I have sold him bad product at this point. His concern is that He sees a Made in Taiwan sticker on them and he feels that these are not Goodmark parts. Everything I have ever ordered from them has always had a Made in Taiwan sticker on them. PLEASE, IF YOU HAVE ever ordered Goodmark stuff and agree with me about this PLEASE make a post to reassure him that I did not do him wrong. I will gladly refund his money if I did wrong. I never want to make someone feel like I cheated them out of something or misrepresented my product.
Thanks Ron

COMMON PROBLEM. Everyone thinks that Goodmark parts are made in America. None of there stuff to the bestof my knowledge is actually made in America. Only a few items that they carry are specifically made for them only, otherwise it is the same fender or whatever that the other guys are selling, just with a different label or sticker saying what the distributor is. Most aftermarket sheetmetal parts for classic vehicles are made by one company and sold to a couple importers for sale to dealers or the public here in the US. Hope this reassures the guy a little. I have worked for two different companies that sell Goodmark parts and you can't understand how tired I am of hearing people say: "Whoa Billy, that dar stuff is made in Amerika"! But I just let em keep thinking that so I don't loose a customer. In the end their still happy about the products but don't trully know the real truth!

If only one company makes them they use two different thicknesses of sheet metal.

I was at a swap meet this month in St. Paul, MN (actually Falcon Heights) at the state fair grounds. A distributor there had a stack of rocker panels. Both left and right. The top one on each stack had a Tri-Plus sticker. The rest had Goodmark stickers. The Tri-Plus ones were visibly lighter gauge metal. When I picked each up the Tri-Plus weighed less than the Goodmark.

I don't work for either company, sell parts, or care either way. I just know what I saw and felt.

They may very well have been made off the same tooling but they definately had different thicknesses of sheet metal.

Yep, someone tried to sell me some tiawan sheet metal at a local shop, I said no thanks and ordered straight thru goodmark, when it arrived, it was the same packaging that the local shop tried to sell me. Seems several companies are marketing the same repop stuff and its made in tiawan.

Even if you go through GM for patch panels and fenders, 75% of the stuff is aftermarket too, if you want a good fender, find a nice original, or try building one yourself, if not, fight and wrestle with an after market tin toy

I agree 100 % man.some aftermarket stuff does fit better then original stuff (sometimes but not always)case In point my grandpa recently had a 81 shortbed stepside done all up (by a professional body man)he found 1 gm door new old stock and 1 aftermarket door.guess which door was a nicer fit?the aftermarket certi-fit door closes easier and fits tighter then new old stock gm also keep In mind all panels new gm or aftermarket 99% of the time need minor tweaking and minor body work nothings perfect.usually gm Is better but not always.

I couldn't get my GoodMark Made in Taiwan front fender to fit correctly so I had to patch the original.

Two fer instances:

1. I bought a repro fender about 12 years ago for my 71. It fit like total krap. I had to redrill the holes in the grill mount bracket to match the fender, it took about an hour of struggle with a crow bar to get the holes lined up for the rad support. And when I got the grill mounted there was about a 1/2" gap just behind the grill where it meets the fender on the side. Needless to say, I'm shopping for original fenders before I paint.

2. Just heard about this. A guy locally bought a complete bed for like $750. He kept the original tailgate because it was still descent. Problem was, the tailgate wouldn't fit the repro box. So he orders the repro tailgate and guess what. It wouldn't fit their own bed.

GM's really taking care of us enthusiasts, huh? Even some of their performance parts (Proform crap) are made in Taiwan. Now, Tawain's the world leader in computer boards, but they have no clue when it comes to making automotive parts. How can a Goodmark tailgate not fit a Goodmark bed? I occasionally buy parts from a guy at swap meets who sells only GM (not Goodmark) rocker panels. They are very expensive, but are heavier gage and fit perfectly. He said selling the cheap stuff was just not worth the headaches. Same goes for door latches. I paid him something like $80 for one, but it's made in the U.S. and works like new. It probably weighs 50% more than the $50 flimsy import from Chevy Duty that didn't work right.

Never have used Goodmark products so I'm not dissing them or defending them but one thing to consider is that even these GM trucks were notrious for parts not interchanging with one another with a great fit. On some of these trucks I have had factory parts fit great and others I have had to shim the sh*t out of them to get them to fit perfectly.

Here's a little soapbox rant about imported parts......
Very few repo parts for these trucks, or any other vehicle for that matter, are made in the US for one reason, economics. I hear people say, "if it was made in America I would buy it because the quality is the best", blah, blah, blah. The parts aren't made in the US cause the manufacturing costs are just too high. The market would be way too small for any of the companies in the supply chain from the manufacturer all the way to the final distributor to sell their US made parts when they would be double or triple the price of an import. Not enough people would buy the US made parts to make it a profitable business. One other thing to consider, how many repo parts start off being made in the US/Canada an get shipped overseas for this very reason....

I would like to send some praise to Ron for being a stand-up guy. I am the one who purchased the parts from Ron and I specifically asked before the sale if the parts he had for sale were Goodmark. You can imagine the surprise when I got some Tri_Plus parts made in Taiwan. I guess I can't fault Ron and yet the parts I received are not what I expected. You know what they say when assume something... right. Ron sold what he said they were.
The patch panels I got are not the same thickness as the original sheetmetal and ultimately that is what I am shooting for. Why go through all the work and put something that is inferior to the original. If anything I want something better so it won't rust out again.

So here's the question.....who makes the best patch panels and that are close to the original thickness. I have some GM replacement rockers and I can attest to the better quality. Now I'm looking for the same quality when it comes to cab corners and cab supports. Silly me thought that it would be Goodmark. Wrong.
The Godmark/Tri-plus panels come in at 1.2mm/.047" thickness. OEM sheetmetal for the cab corners is .062". Doesn't sound like much but it is.

Thanks again Ron for standing behind what you sell. I'll send you a PM to resolve this.

Very good ?????

Who does make the best quality after market parts as equal or better then original , that's what I want to buy? I know about the price thing I'm willing to pay more , quality is what I want and wishfully made in America on the label. And also I don't mind a little tinkering to the part to fit right ( perfect that is ) but no major repairs to a new part and still not be satisfy. I want correct thinkness and the right cut . Cutting the cornners on quailty in parts is not what I want , and of course the best guarantee , or am I in dream land . ARE THEY OUT THERE!!! Sorry about that . I want to know for I own a 67 shortbed in need of lots of new or replaced metal , thats right rust city baby. As the money come's along I will build it. O men sorry if I went off subjet.
Take care all

Didn't know they made anything in America anymore ....lol... I am doin a 69 C-10 right now and everything I bought from LMC has had to be cut , trimmed or just flat out had the crap knocked outta it, to make it fit .( if you want clean lines that is) I just bought a bedside from Indy Chev dealer for a 86 long bed , and hell , it was stamped made in Mexico $475.00 my cost , lil disappointing . Anyway thats my 2 cents .....jyd

Who makes the best patch panel as thick as original.
Answer you do. You would have to make your own patch panels if you want that gauge.
