82 GMC Sierra wheels and tires..

Hey guys, I'm new here. I've got an 82 GMC Sierra with a built 350 I'm working on. Wheels and tires, and lowering is next on my list.

I'm going to be lowering it 4/5 and I'm looking to put black 15 inch wheels on it, and the biggest tires I can fit on the rear.

I was originally going to go with 15x8 in front and 15x10 in rear with a 5 inch backspacing in the rear, but I'm not finding many 15x10 wheels with a 5 inch backspacing.

So, I think I may just do 15x8 all the way around. I'm looking at getting Cragar soft 8s.

If I get a 15x8 with a 4 inch backspacing and Mickey Thompson 30x12.50x15 tires , will it tuck ok in the rear?

I'm gonna run smaller tires up front, what backspacing should I go with on the 15x8 front wheels?

Thanks, so you think I can go 4 inch backspacing front and back with a 4/5 drop and be about right?

Re: 82 GMC Sierra wheels and tires..

^Thanks alot for the help

I think I will run this tire on the back If I go with 15x8.

Are these about as wide as I can go with the stock bed and frame?

If anyone knows of any black wheels that are 15x10 with 5 inch backspacing, let me know. If I could ever find them I'd still probably prefer to use those on the rear.

Summit's search tool is really nice to narrow down your search by certain specs to find exactly what you need. It seems like your only options are circle track style wheels, but I think they look pretty mean though!

Re: 82 GMC Sierra wheels and tires..

Thanks. I guess I could go with something like that, and then just have them painted black.

Anyone know if Cragar does any custom backspacing?

Thanks. Circle track wheels do look good, will they support the weight of my truck?

Also, I wonder if those colored stripes that go around the lip are removable stickers?

I'm thinking I might go with these and just get them painted black.

Does paint on wheels generally hold up pretty good, as long as it's done right?

Re: 82 GMC Sierra wheels and tires..

Most stock car wheels are not DOT approved, but they are an all steel wheel. I can't see them being weak, the typical stock car is quite heavy, they fly around the track at pretty high speed and there is often paint/rubber trading with other cars. The absence of the DOT approval may just be to save racers money. I wouldn't have any worries about street use.

Can't go wrong with the rally wheels though.

Yeah, I'm thinking I'll go with the rallys and just get them painted black, and I'll run 15x10 in the rear with a 315/60/15 Mickey Thompson ET Street.

Re: 82 GMC Sierra wheels and tires..

I'm going to do 15x8 front and 15x10 rear ralleys, and have them powder coated black.

I'm gonna run Mickey Thompson ET streets on the rear 315/60/15.

I was thinking a 255/60/15 in front. Would this be a good tire choice for the front?

I wonder if they will have a blackwall on one side? I don't want white letters facing out.

Re: 82 GMC Sierra wheels and tires..

My 255-15 on ralleys rub the letters ever so slightly on full turns. Look into spindles closely. I went with the 3" drops and have has issues with the control arm rubbing the wheels also. The more spring lowering you do the closer the control are is to the wheel. If I do it again I'd go with the 2.5 drop spindles. Some look at this as a good reason to go with a larger diamter wheel. So many choices and so many head scratchers. Good luck and enjoy.

Re: 82 GMC Sierra wheels and tires..

Thanks. I was planning on just using these 4 inch drop springs.

So, not a good idea?

Re: 82 GMC Sierra wheels and tires..

Should be good with 255s. Here's 255s with a 3.5 drop. Expecting my springs to settle just a little more over time. Are those springs advertised at a 4" drop?

Re: 82 GMC Sierra wheels and tires..

Nice truck. Yeah they are advertised on summit as 4 inches in the side menu. So, I shouldn't have control arm issues then?

Re: 82 GMC Sierra wheels and tires..

No control arm to wheel issues that I'm aware of. You may have some issues with getting enough camber though. Some people have mentioned ride issues but these are trucks not Buicks. You will however need to have shorter shock absorbers in the front.

Keep going. It's only pocket change to build these trucks.

Things are easy if your a pic-pocket

haha, yeah it's an expensive hobby that's for sure.

I would like to just do the 4 inch drop springs if they would be alright, because it is cheaper than doing a spring and spindle combo to get 4 inches of drop.

But, I don't have a good chance of getting proper alignment with using 4 inch drop springs?

Re: 82 GMC Sierra wheels and tires..

i dont think 4inch springs are available. and if they are it will have a horrible ride. If you are looking into a 4inch drop in will probably be 2" spindle 2" spring

Yeah, it may just be some wrong info on summits site. I guess I might just use spindles and springs.
