Re: Chucks SWB Fleetside

Did a little on Choncho today.
I got my new front rotors on and calipers and new hoses all hooked up. While doing this I noticed there was a lot of loose slag inside of the rotors between the bearing races. I took a drill with a small wire brush on it and cleaned it out. I showed a couple pics of the excess slag that was in there. This would eat bearings I presume.
I also took the steering link off and replaced one outer tie rod end. I painted it also. I will have the guys that do the alignment replace the other outer and both inners.
I got my temporary dash ready to go in. I took the steering column and brake booster off so I can do my firewall.

Thanks guys.
Yeah me neither. Its been a long time since I've bought some rotors, but I don't remember ever having that stuff on the inside.

Re: Chucks SWB Fleetside

Looking good Chuck, you do some nice solid work. I'm glad I read your thread. Found some useful information on here. I was wondering how I was going to fit my sheet metal patch on fuel filler neck and get it right. I noticed you cut the lip off the back which seems like it made it easier to fit. Now I have the patch, not real sure if I want to take the plunge and spend the extra cash on the tank conversion.

Re: Chucks SWB Fleetside

Thanks Scott. I know what you mean. I didn't know for sure if I would like it the first time I did one but I do know that I'll do it from now on, on my project trucks. The only problem I've had were the sending units. Some would go out and others had bad floats.

As far as cutting the lip out, this was the first time I did that. And it does make it easier to adjust the metal to weld it together, by using a small flat blade screwdriver to manipulate the metal up or down. Also if you have to dolly it a little it makes it easier.

Re: Chucks SWB Fleetside

I'm heading to harbor freight to pick up a dolly tomorrow. Your welds look perfect too Chuck, are you using a mig welder with gas? My welds don't turn out that nice.

Yes I am. I got one of those H-F migs (220volt) and argon mix tank. I think they have a hammer and dolly set there.

Re: Chucks SWB Fleetside

I got a very late start today. I helped the wife with some stuff she had to get ready and take to work. I started sanding the firewall. I thought I was done until I pushed the truck back in and saw a row of factory runs right in the middle. So more sanding. The spots of primer showing through are where there were scratches and runs from the factory. Theres quite a few. 1st one is the before.

I also got the steering link back on and tightened up.
