electric choke dash light

Put a new edlebrock 1406 carb on my 84 tonight. The po had disconected the electric choke wire on the old carb(also a edelbrock). When I connected it the choke light came on in the dash. Truck started fine came off high idle fine but the light stayed on in the dash? How does that light work on the factory carb??? Does it come on when you turn the key then go off after you start the truck? Or does it stay on until the choke goes off? When "should" it go off? I have not adjusted the choke any yet.....

Good news is the truck runs alot cleaner now. No more raw gas smell...

Take a look here:

My bet is that your oil pressure switch is disconnected. The connector to the oil pressure switch on my 84 K10 is jumpered to get rid of the light and power the choke heater.

leaning twards just leaving the electic choke wire off. Truck starts and runs fine without it.

Re: electric choke dash light

If your truck starts fine and idles OK without the choke hooked up, then you are very lucky. I would say leave it alone until you can't start it or you get dieseling when you shut it off, or it runs rich. If you have trouble with your stock choke I recommend converting to a manual choke - I did that with all old vehicles I have owned, including 3 squares.

Found out that the factory choke wire does NOT provide a full 12V when key is on.
I'm going to run a new wire to a "keyed" 12V source and see how she works.
