Lets talk mild brake upgrade
72 C20. Originally a Big Block truck.
power brakes front disc rear drum Lets say I want to replace all the brake parts. calipers X 2 $28ea Rotors x 2 $86ea pads (comes with calipers) front and rear hoses $40 shoes $56 drums x 2 $65ea wheels cylinders x2 $20ea master cylinder $30 brake booster $73 splitter/proportioner? Prices are just quick grabs from rock auto. comes to about $560 what would you do to go a step or 2 over stock or is it even worth it? Rear disc conversion looks like a big deal with fabrication etc. not ready for that. Not looking for 5 piston nascar stuff but i figure if I'm going to yank it all out anyway I might as well do something a little nicer. any ideas? Last edited by JointTech; 01-20-2013 at 06:59 AM. |

Re: Lets talk mild brake upgrade
I have the same set up as you and thought about upgrading mine since I was building a bigger big block.
I order a new (not reman) booster, m/c, proportioning valve all in one for around $300.00 upgraded the front rubber lines to stainless steel I think around $100.00 replaced all the front rotor bearings (since your going to have it all apart) I think that was close to $200.00 ( i went with American made, not Chinese) Wilwood makes a kit D52 around $375.00 new 2 piston calipers and pads. I'm not sure how much better stopping power you will get with it. I am thinking I will convert to 5 lug down the road and go with bigger brakes so I skipped this upgrade. I have all of these parts you/I listed in boxes, ready to go so I can't say how much better they are yet.

Re: Lets talk mild brake upgrade
already had a 73 5 lug rear in my 70...put on rear drums and backing plates off an 85 van ,gave me 2 3/4 shoes instead of 2"...r/s handbrake cable comes off rear of backing plate on van but stamping is universal so i welded up hole and drilled a new one in front...used r/s arms and hardware off the 73 ... maybe some other application exists where no mod is necessary but these were free...
