I don't go off road that much either and I doubt that you have been doing it since before I was born as I will be 5 years older than you in the upcoming week. Just glad that I am not as old as Stodder though. I think that he is the old fart on the board.

I'm building the truck for a fun winter driver as well. Rims are original or that era. I'm not putting monsters on it. Ill take your advice just bolting the brace. The truck won't be offroaded at least on purpose . The power steering is just for ease of daily use.

Happy B-day Ron! wow, somebody here thats older than me and still works on this old stuff. I should of known you've been around as the great info you post on here. I do have a set of toyoda 17x7 or 7 1/2 with 4 1/2 bs that came on the truck. the 15x8 rims were given to me by my neighbor. trying to save some $$$ somewhere. still need to rebuild the eng and running gear after pulling the cab.

Is this steering stop org? looks a add on to me? with my new steering my knuckles are about 1/2" from hitting them. don't remember where they were with the manual steering.

you didn't shorten the steering arm did you. you may not be getting enough travel from the new box(it may not travel far enough to get it there), if you shorten the steering arm that will mean less travel for the pitman arm
I will make a measure on the one that I have here tomorrow if you like. mine hit the stops. one way to check it is to disconnect the drag link from the pitman arm and check the travel. young fellow like you should be able to figure that out

no i didn't shorten the arm (yet) the stops look stock as some other axles i have found pics of. probably still turn as good as my 2000 Z71 extended cab. a friend has a 1 ton 4x4 ford crew long bed, talk about wide turning radius. wanted to get some of the frame stuff done before blasting and paint.

that would be with the shortened arm. the length of the one that I have is 7 3/8" from the centre of the k/pin axis to the centre of the drag link end hole

thanks for the pic Ron. my truck is not street-able as you can see. waiting on a belt for the PS. should come today. my drag link is not parallel with my spring, off a little and shortening would cure that. don't know if that is going to be a problem.

Jwarnquist---how about a pic of your shortened arm?

Thanks for all the helpful info. There sure isn't a lot out there on 4x4's. I was wondering in the picks of the original steering arm on the axle I see a ball joint sticking up. How did you remove it? If I am reading correctly the hole was tapered when it was removed? How much did the new steering parts run you? Sorry for all the questions, but I want to have all my ducks in a row. I really like the fact that you guys post lots of pictures it sure helps.

the ball that is sticking up is for the stock drag link rod (shaft) it is a taper fit like a regular tie rod end. $$$ depends on new or used steering box/pump/brackets/hoses and autozone or moog parts and captfabs mounting plate.

we have power steering!!!!!!!! it actually works.

jwernquist------didn't mean to hi-jack your thread, but there is not much info about P/S on the 60-66 K trucks. did you get your steering arm back? Pic? hope your threads info helps others.

thats what i hope also. my used P/S box leaks-----another rebuild (looks like the steering shaft out of the box to column shaft)

and usually it is the shaft worn where the seal sits. the dirt and grime sits on top of the seal and encourages wear there. usually easier to just put in a new box.

power steering is up and working. one thing that we talked about in this swap is the steering arm. It definitely has to be shortened. the axle doesn't turn good as is (stock) it really doesn't now. I have a longer pitman arm i might try?--the stock steering arm looks like you could just cut the end off and re-drill a new hole and taper it. it could be heated and bent up so it's level? and no i'm not swapping axles. (should never say that)

put in a tilt column ($159.00) off e-bay-----junk!!!!! another story.

I have a question about locating the power steering box. Did you use any of the original steering box holes to locate the new box and brackets.

I may have missed it but did anyone mention what model front axle you were working on? My 3/4 ton 4x4 is Dana 44 front...is that what you guys are working with too?
