Hood reinforcement?
The body shop is asking me if I'd like the hood reinforced in any way. They're worried that the factory hoods are too flimsy. I've never noticed an issue myself, but haven't lived with one of these trucks for a long time.
Is this something people do, or something they regret not doing if they don't? Thanks, Dave

Mines lasted 41 years as is. Don't think it needs extra work now

Re: Hood reinforcement?
I know the next generation of trucks had a habit of buckling hoods, but I've never seen it with a 67-72. Our hoods have a better side profile and are stronger in that plane than the later, flatter models.

Re: Hood reinforcement?
I think they are trying to get some extra $$$. My 70 hood is original and is good for another 43 yrs.

Re: Hood reinforcement?
The only thing I can think of is were the foam goes between the inner supports and the skin to keep it from popping in and out like a tin can

Re: Hood reinforcement?
Whatever you do, don't glue the outer skin to the brace.

Re: Hood reinforcement?
This is true. Maybe the body shop guys had heard of problems with the square hoods and mistakenly thought yours needed reinforcing. It does not.

Re: Hood reinforcement?
The truck I bought was parked in an empty lot down the street with a for sale sign on it. After I bought it, some neighbors told me they saw it for sale too, and that the day they drove by, the heavy set PO was STANDING on the hood as he wrote for sale on the windshield! I don't have any dents on the hood. I'm sure you'll be fine

Re: Hood reinforcement?
Many of these trucks had a 1/4" to q 3/8" thick rubber strip between the hood skin and the support runners under the hood. That way they had something to keep them from flexing.

Re: Hood reinforcement?
I cut 2 strips of rubber carpet pad and wedged them between the skin & support runners. No more rattles and hood seems real solid.

Re: Hood reinforcement?
I wonder if they're talking about reinforcing the brace where the hood hinge mounts? I see these trucks all the time with the rear of the hood sticking up, my 69 did this and I adjusted the hinges all the way down trying to get it to sit flat. When I repaint it I'm going to bend the hinge mount back and reinforce it somehow. When I open or close the hoods on both my trucks I can see the band that the hinges are mounted to flexing, I think the one in my 69 is bent after all these years. So maybe that's what they're talking about?

Re: Hood reinforcement?
I worked at a Chevy dealer way back when. I saw a few of the 73-up hoods that had a serious bend in them. I've never seen it with a 67-72.

Re: Hood reinforcement?
The main "bend" problem I've seen with the 67-72 hoods is the center. This usually happened when some thing or one heavy sat in the middle. If it's straight, and doesn't rattle,I wouldn't do anything unless I planned to sit on it.
