Hey all. Just curious what others have done I have a 72 gmc 3/4 ton I started to tare down the truck but money and situation has changed so I'm debating just putting the front back together and driving it for now it needs some engine work so ill take care of that but debating the rest

i got mine a year ago. got rid of the twenties and put on the big and little wheels.fixed a few jobs that needed fixing for a D.D.
Good enough for now and will retire in 2 years and will build it up properly then.

I drove mine before the tear down all the time. 71 lwb 6cyl 3speed now its a swb (frame swap) 350 /700r4 and hasn't been drove in months. I enjoyed it more before I tore into it.

Just bought mine, drove for a few days, pulling the engine for another I have in wait, but will keep driving as I go along. After the engine will be 700R4 then different paint. There's lots you can do while keeping it as a driver. Engine swap can be done in a day if you work fast, trans same thing, just plan ahead. Paint will take a few days. I ordered a new carpet kit that should be here by the weekend. I'm going with stuff that can be done in a day and will make drastic changes. Not going to do a frame off on my truck. Been there done that too many times. Just sold the last one unfinished, ran out of motivation/lost interest. That's never fun.

I dont think it will be back on the road for awhile got alot of body work and i'm sure they'll be some bugs too work out ughh!

the kids truck was a garage orniment for 4 years then even after it was done it still sat there for a year till he was able to get it legal

That was the plan with my son's truck 'Nancy' - but after the initial 25 mile drive home Nancy had other plans - lol. We spent the next 6 to 8 months getting her off life support. Good times! Wouldn't trade that time together for anything.

Both...if you wait until you think your done all you planned to do, there's always something else that crops up. Seems like You'll never get to drive er. It's always nice to watch a work-in- progress on the road.

I fixed mine enough to drive it, now I'm doing everything in stages. The intent all along was to have something I can drive while I work on it. Luckily I found a truck that is in good enough shape to do that.

Bought mine and drove it home. Did some minor repairs while waiting on the tags and registration. Now I am daily driving it and doing repairs as I can. Two weeks ago I replaced the drivers side floor pan. Last week I regreased the hubs and swapped out the exhaust. This weekend it is back to body work. Either replacing the passenger side floor pan or getting the cab corners/rockers swapped. Then its time for a motor upgrade (heads, cam, intake, HEI, and internal regulator alternator) or door repair. All the oil has been changed, most of the extra wiring has been removed (used to be a brush truck for a local fire dept) and the suspension is rebuilt. Not bad for owning the truck for 6 weeks and 1k more miles on the odometer. I say drive it and enjoy it. You can always pull it off the road for a week or two here and there as projects dictate. It is hard to stay motivated on a project that doesn't run.

I drove mine for about two weeks before I started tearing it apart. Im in the Army, so I get one a day a week maybe to work on it, so it is taking a good while just to get it apart. Which allows me to save some monies while I slowly tear her down.

You like that engine set up, I was debating on grabbing a 5.3 that have 0 miles on it just because its available and converting to your type of set up.

I've owned five 67-72's in the last four or so years, as well as a few other classic cars previous to my current obsession. I can honestly say that I've enjoyed the ones I just cleaned up and drove more than the ones that I've done driver restorations on. Part of that is my lack of a good facility to work in, but I think that the other part is driving the restorations after they are done. I tend to notice every little flaw on the restorations, while I can more easily overlook the little stuff on the ones I just buy and drive. It hasn't stopped me from doing and planning more restorations, but I'm starting to realize that I like driving them more than I like working on them! Just my $.02, which is worth about $.01 in today's economy.

Everytime I go out folks are shooting me a thumbs up. Shes no looker -- Brakes, steering are good -- tires are fair. Oh and my AAA is paid up to date.

I have been gathering parts for my winter 13 tear down and will be driving it till then

Pics can be decieving but it looks pretty solid. I would dive into that one and knock it out quick. Do the body work and shoot a coat of paint. After that just enjoy it as you play around with it. Having a second ride is always a bonus!

I'm with Dale. Drive it, get an idea of what needs replaced, and start watching for parts. A paint job is a lot easier to swing if you don't need to do a bunch of bodywork. If you aren't in a hurry, you can get most of what you need pretty cheap. Fenders, doors, hood, etc.. are easy to swap out and can often be found cheaper than the cost to repair what you have (at least out West where I am). Heck, I have four complete spare doors, a spare hood, a parts cab, and who knows what else laying around right "just in case" because I found them for cheap. Once you have what you need, pull it into a shop and spend the winter putting it all together. Unless you REALLY enjoy the process of tearing it apart and putting it together, I'd spend as much time driving it and as little time working on it as possible.

I'm always so excited I want to get it running to drive it asap. Like Tomahawk30 said Drive it so you know what is wrong. It's very easy to miss something that's wrong when you've never driven it before.

It's got the typical rocker and corner rust but otherwise very solid it's from Colorado so it's rust is nothing like our good old iowa rust here
