Head Light Warning Buzzer

My 1985 Chevrolet K30 truck has a warning chime/buzzer if you leave the lights on and key off. I like this feature and want to add it to my 1974 K20.

I went to the junkyard and got the same part number warning chime/buzzer as my '85 to wire up in the '74. I also bought the GM wiring diagram manual for the '85. When I wire the chime/buzzer up as per the diagram it will not work. To verify it works, I put the junkyard unit in the '85 it works as it should.

Has anyone wired up one of these in their older vehicle?

Re: Head Light Warning Buzzer

I just ran them over. Go through with a test light and verify what's getting power and not

It was a pi$$ed-off bumble bee under my dash and it took a flying leap over the fence shortly after buying the truck

Re: Head Light Warning Buzzer

I got one online somewhere for about $5, put it on my 79. I'll see if I can find it. I need one for my 85 now.

Found it, NAPA carries them: http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/Re...Dp%3d3%26N%3d0

If you want an original unit, go to the junk yard. If you have an 84-91 square body truck it will plug in and work. It's that easy. Some of the 81-83 trucks were wired for the headlight chime, mostly Silverado's. Also, the 88-94 Trucks and G vans (full size) have the same unit. The one from NAPA is not OEM.

Also, there are two different chimes/buzzers.

1.) the base model chime/buzzer makes a buzzing sound and is ONLY to remind you to put your seat belt on. Has nothing to do with head lights. Put your seat belt on before turning the key on and you will not hear the buzzer.

2.) then there is the warning chime for seat belts AND head lights on with key off. This unit does not "Buzz" but makes a tone. Sounds very different than the base seat belt warning only buzzer. The tone is made for 8 seconds when you first turn the key on IF the seat belt is not buckled OR if you turn the key off and leave the head lights on. It will sound until you turn off the lights OR turn the key back on.

Re: Head Light Warning Buzzer

If you have to have a factory chime, the late 70's to early 80's Caddy chime is great.

Re: Head Light Warning Buzzer

My previous post had mistakes sorry for any incontinence.

Red450ih you want to use a 7 pin GM chime module that has a nice tone and speed.
There are many 7 pin chimes that GM used but the best ones I have found were pat #.

22533568
22535998
and probably other numbers .
These were used in many mid 80’s GM cars.
These modules use a speaker instead of round steel disc to make the chime sound.

To make the chime ding when the lights are left on and the door is opened.-

Run a wire from the door jamb switch to pin 3 and pin 6 on chime module.
Pin 3 is ground for the module and pin 6 catches ground when the door is opened making the module chime..
By using the door jamb switch as ground for pin 3 & 6 the module can not use any juice when the door is closed.
Run a wire from the top plug on the head light switch to pin 7 on the chime module.
The top pin on the head light switch has 12 volts on it when the parking lights are on.

Re: Head Light Warning Buzzer

Problem is, everybody has already removed them and none of the trucks in the wrecking yards have them
