Simple fuel filler

I've seen a couple threads with people asking about fuel fillers and wanting suggestions of how to build one for cheap. Here's what we built...

That's one piece of sheetmetal with 2 bends and 1 weld forming the outer "box". Welded a piece of small angle to the part of the box where it contacts the stake pocket and the bedside... drilled and tapped the bed for 1/4" bolts. The access panel allowed us to reach in to attach it to the bed as well as hook up the filler hose, vent and cap. Used a 90 degree piece of exhaust tubing to make the curve to the fuel cell, rubber fuel line goes from the 90 to the fuel cell, and to the cap. Box was sprayed with bedliner material before it was installed.

Re: Simple fuel filler

First one we did like this... same concept just uses a "pop up" style cap. The angle of the cap dictated the angle of the top of the box. Has been in use over 2 years. Rattle can paint job on a truck that's been worked like a chinese slave...

Something like that would be neat with an old Jerry can.

Re: Simple fuel filler

Both caps came from ebay and were listed as "boat" fuel fillers. The pop up cap worked great until it got moisture in it combined with below freezing temperatures... caused it to fail to "pop up". Plans are to replace it with another one just like it and see what happens. The flip top cap seems to work well so far... the opening is actually larger.
