Turbo 400 question

I have a 68 C10 with a turbo 400 transmission. I just installed the driveshaft and linkage. It doesnt have a dip stick yet and I also need to put fluid in. I started the truck to see if it would go into gear but it didnt do anything. I didnt want to leave it running or try for very long because of the no dipstick and fluid so I only tried twice. I'm new to this so any help would be awesome!!

Re: Turbo 400 question

Don't do that! Put fluid in and hope you have not already ruined the trans. Fluid is what makes the bands clamp which makes it shift. You may need a new trans.

It wont do anything without fluid. you need dipstick and fluid before running it.

I pray you didnt fry the bands or friction plates. place the dipstick in, filler up with good trans fluid, run it for a few minutes and then move from park to neutral slowly. Then try reverse.
Good luck.

Re: Turbo 400 question

Didnt mean to scare anybody but I want to correct myself. It does have fluid but its old. I meant to say it didnt have new fluid. It does not have a dipstick so I was curious would this make it not engage?

Thats a lot easier to handle. The Dipstick wont have anything to do with the shifting or engaging.....only determine how much fluids in it and if not seated good enough to seal at the casing it will leak. Now that being said, when you ran it with the current fluid, and no dip stick tube in place, did it leak out? If not odds are you still dont have enough fluid in it to make it engage. Or keep this in mind as well.......if the fluid is REALLY old it is possible the trans may already have a wore out band.

I would still drain out the fluid, and refill with fresh. Try it again, if not working then you should at least try to do a trans flush.

Re: Turbo 400 question

No leaks at all. I have a dipstick coming tomorrow. I will put that in and drain the fluid and put some new fluid in. Thanks!
