Re: Crushing Gumby 71 Shortbed Patina build
Everything about this truck is perfect,... but those side mirrors have to go!
How about a 71-72 Sport mirror install thread?

Re: Crushing Gumby 71 Shortbed Patina build
Its funny you mention the mirrors... Aside from the rear bumper, they were the first thing I planned to replace when I got the truck. I don't really like the sport mirrors myself as they look a little too 70's passenger car to me. I actually have a set of 67-69 mirrors ready to go on the truck. I think those fit the basic utilitarian look just right. Im with you buddy, I hate those mirrors on there too.

Re: Crushing Gumby 71 Shortbed Patina build
Glad you were thinking about replacing them.
I just like the 71-72 sport mirrors on a 71 or 72 truck,... because that is what is correct for the truck. My last '71 swb was as bare bones as you could get,... and it had sport mirrors. I'm kinda weird about year correct items. (kinda like buddy bucket seats only belong in 67-68 trucks) Ha. Here's the sport mirror dimensions if you change your mind,...

Re: Crushing Gumby 71 Shortbed Patina build
Cool, thanks for that. I would agree with you that keeping the truck year specific is a good idea and I typically feel the same way on the trucks I do, but the mirror thing has always bugged me. I think the 67-69 mirrors are just so much more simple. I think they match the look of the truck Im building. I totally agree on the Buddy buckets Yesterday was a real blur, I had a photo shoot with another car so no time to put into Gumby, and today my neck is throbbing so Im going to take it easy. I will be back on it Monday though so stay tuned!

Re: Crushing Gumby 71 Shortbed Patina build
Parts parts parts, still waiting on some more parts to show up. Got a big box full of some of it, as well as the carpet too. Im about to swap my master cyl for a new CPP item. Do any of you guys know if the stock power brake master cyl off my 71 will bolt on to a 74 square body c10? Any changes that need to be made or is it just a simple swap? Hope someone knows the answer.

Re: Crushing Gumby 71 Shortbed Patina build
WOW, time flys! I made a few changes to Gumby that are worth noting. After putting some miles on it over the last few weeks, I felt like the KYB front shocks that came in my kit were really too soft, so those came off and I swapped on some CPP Nitro gas shocks. What a huge difference! So much more controlled and no annoying bounce rebound. I plan to swap the rears out too. I also got the old booster off and swapped to the CPP item. I will post an install of that too so that anyone at home hoping to go from manual to power brakes can have a visual of how its done. More stuff coming soon!
Hope you guys are enjoying the build as much as I am!

Re: Crushing Gumby 71 Shortbed Patina build
I have been busy with other projects over the past few weeks but I am back on Gumby this week. The entire outside has been buffed and polished and it shines really well now! Im amazed at how well the original paint came back. No pics of that yet, Im doing a photo shoot this weekend. For today, I focused on fixing the tailgate letters. At some point in the past the previous owner decided to paint silver over the white Chevrolet letters. I spent some time using acetone and getting the silver paint off but the white under it was sanded so it looked really bad. I cleaned up the letters as best I could and then spent an hour taping off each letter and getting it prepped for paint. After that I hit it with GM white to match the roof of my truck. After unmasking it I was pretty satisfied with how it came out. Much MO better!
I also swapped out all the faded lenses all around the truck and the rear bumper will go on tomorrow. Then its time to get on the inside of Gumby. Seat cover gets here tomorrow and thats the last missing part.

Re: Crushing Gumby 71 Shortbed Patina build
Thanks guys! Im a VW guy first and have always had a C10 kicking around the house to use as a shop truck... I finally decided to treat my truck like I treat my bugs. That bug is my daily driver. Its all OG paint faded out to the killer patina you see here. Its a 58 Euro ragtop so it has the cool turn signals that pop out of the body:
Chrisvuc has my old 51 Split window. (which I would love to get back) I am always amazed at how many VW guys I find that I know in the hot rod and C10 world. I love how it crosses over. C10 King, I will be at Brothers with the truck but it will look quite a bit different. Delmo and I have been hashing out a plan that involves Porterbuilt and Accuair, etc etc etc... Just wait!

Re: Crushing Gumby 71 Shortbed Patina build
I enjoyed the step by step you did. Very nice work. Just did the drop myself a few weeks ago. haven't done a c-notch yet, but it might happen soon. Especially if I plan on using the hidden hitch I picked up from ECE.

Re: Crushing Gumby 71 Shortbed Patina build
Thanks guys! Well I finally got around to getting the bumper mounted up and plate out of the back window. Im really pleased with the overall now. The only issue now is that I have to take the whole truck apart! Yep, Porterbuilt stuff is being ordered and all the other good stuff that goes along with it is coming soon. Delmo found a little space in the shop to stick Gumby so get ready for some changes to come. Today Im going to do the inside and I will post up some step by steps for those of you that have questions on how to swap your dash pad and gauge clusters. I have seen a bunch of people ask how its done so stay tuned.
