Re: 454 bbc thrown out!!!

The guy at the shop seems to thimk the intake manifold gasket failed and the motor itself didn't have many hours on it. The cylinder walls still had the cross hatched grooves and the pistons weren't that abused either.

Re: 454 bbc thrown out!!!

Rent a ball hone, give the walls a quick cross hatch pattern, use cast iron rings, they seat quick, new bearings, seals and your good to go, use the same cam, buy new lifters...

Re: 454 bbc thrown out!!!

Since that block is setup for a factory roller cam, I would seriously consider going with a roller cam. Even if you can only afford a good used or new take out OEM roller cam and lifters. With the oils we have these days and all the problems with flat tappet cams going flat, I would hesitate to take the risk with a flat tappet cam. Especially in a fresh rebuild.

Re: 454 bbc thrown out!!!

Assuming the block turns out ok, I'll ask what cam is a good choice since the block is gen vi, heads are gen v. What intake, carb (or TBI a better choice?), pully system, water pump, dist (HEI of course) is best for the application? I know the TH350 is not the first option with the 454.

Re: 454 bbc thrown out!!!

Is there enough clearance at the fire wall for the dist to sit the bb in there? I see where my mounts are and it looks possible that I can move the perch forward and set a bb. Pic is pass side at the perch/mount.

Re: 454 bbc thrown out!!!

You need to check that block, but I believe that you`ll have to use an electric fuel pump as that one will not have a provission for the standard fuel pump..

Re: 454 bbc thrown out!!!

I was reading somthing about the gen v and vi blocks not having the fuel boss, but if thats the case no biggie.. then I can make sure I am supplying the right amount of fuel pressure to the motor... Might even go as far as relocating the fuel tank..

Re: 454 bbc thrown out!!!

Good score!

My best friend was at the wrecking yard and saw a burned up 80's dually.
He noticed the Intake was aftermarket and looked a little closer...
...so was the block and heads.

The fire started in the cab and traveled into the engine compartment.

He got the motor for $200 since it was crispy...

He took it to work, tore it apart, and hot tanked it...
555 CUBIC INCHES!

It's going in his 66' El Camino

Re: 454 bbc thrown out!!!

I cut the firewall to set the engine back. Others just move the perches to the forward holes and avoid this. I wanted my engine set back.
I also used tubular perches because the headers would not clear the stock ones on the left side.

I guess it's not hijacking since it's your thread

I don't think he even knows how many coats of color or clear are on it at this point. After having work done at a couple different shops he decided to do it himself.
He burned through in one place buffing it and found some body work he wasn't happy with so it's been redone once and fixed more than once since then.

The 61 Brookwood wagon in the reflection used to be mine when it was sea foam green ( and a beater).

He has an LS6 and a 6 speed to go in the wagon when he gets around to it.

Hey Chevy Fleetside.. How far did you notch the fire wall to sit the motor in? Only around the valve covers or more, I only can see just a bit in the pic. Also, nice setup..

Re: 454 bbc thrown out!!!

I just measured were the heads would be then cut 3 lines out on the firewall and bent the metal back and welded in some patches. Not sure if you can see it in the picture or not. Here is my build thread. http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...d.php?t=259536 Some of it is good. Would I do it again? not really sure. PITB..

Re: 454 bbc thrown out!!!

You have a few choices for motor mounts. The '67-'72 small block motor mount brackets bolt into the forward mounting holes. The '68-'71 big block motor mount brackets also bolt into the forward holes, but position the engine in between the forward and rear mounting positions. Then you can also use the motor mount brackets from a '73-'87 C20 or C30. These will also position the engine in between the forward and rear positions, but will use the better style (IMO) motor mounts.

Re: 454 bbc thrown out!!!

Roller is definitely a better way to go, especially with the quality of today's oils. For the past decade, the oil manufacturers have slowly started removing zinc from the oil. On a flat tappet cam, zinc is really critical because it helps cushion the extreme force between the lifter and the cam lobe. You can flatten a brand new cam lobe in minutes during initial break-in if you use a modern oil without zinc or a break-in additive.

The biggest issue with rollers is the price. The cams usually a steel billet, and they cost more. The lifters are more expensive as well. Actually, the factory (Delphi) stock roller lifter is a pretty good piece. It's heavier than an aftermarket lifter, but they're reliable, easy to find, and pretty cheap. I'm not sure how stout you want to make your engine, but you might be able to find a factory take-out roller cam with no miles for super-cheap. I used to get the catalogs for Performance Products, and they used to have an area called the "Broom Sheet" where they had lots of take-out factory roller cams for less than $50.

Re: 454 bbc thrown out!!!

Only downside to a roller is added cost. Do some looking around and you might be able to find a good used cam/ lifter set.

WOW! That's got to be the best find ever! I really wonder how it ended up on the side of the road. A big heavy 454 is worth a fair amount these days just in scrap iron!

I was wrong on the business name. It's not Performance Products, it's Competition Products. Here's a link to the Broom Sheet:
