New shroud or switch to electric fan? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Well, my truck has cooled fine since I got it put back together. But a 2wd shroud on a 4wd truck seems to be more than it can handle now that I have added Vintage air. My stock gauge has usually ran right at the first (normal)? mark even after installing the condenser, but after charging my system it stays right in the middle even at highway speeds. I realize this is heat transfer from condenser, but my main problem is that my fan is not even close to being inside the shroud (which vintage air reccomends it being at least 2/3 inside shroud). So I am faced with getting the proper 4wd shroud, or installing an electric fan setup. Like 71Rat's install http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=254617 I believe I can get a Jeep Grand Cherokee fan at ly local salvage for less than 50 bucks. So what do you guys think the best route is? The new shroud I can get from LMC is 75 shipped.

I thought about that, O'reillys only sells a 2 inch spacer. Looks like I need to extend it at least 4 inches just to get to 2/3 in. Looks like I have another problem that I have overlooked. My fan clutch is shot, I can spin it freely and even tried taping it to the shroud and revved the engine and it never broke loose. So now i'm faced with replacing the fan clutch and shroud or going with electric. Think the cheapest and best route is the one 71Rat came up with.

Well I personally would switch over to a electric fan with shroud attached. If you go to a salvage yard and get a 1998 Lincoln Mark 8 Electric fan and wiring as far as you can cut, you will pull 3300CFM of air. We use them on all of our hotrods. Plus the old fan clutch could be more of your problem on that fan than the shroud. I like the option to remove the mechanical fan, easy the drag off your motor, and never have to worry about a faulty fan clutch again. Wiring electric is easy.
You will expect to pay at most $40 for the Lincoln electric fan and another $30-$50 for a Adjustable Temp Relay Switch.

So which fan is the better option? The Lincoln fan or the Jeep fan? Will the Mark 8 fan mount in the stock shroud like the Jeep fan will? And what would it hurt to not use a relay and simply wire to an ignition on source and run all the time?

The Lincoln Mark8 fan comes with its own shroud. I dont much about a jeep fan. We have wiped out our yards up here of all fans from Lincoln Mark8's.
As far as running a fan all the time, its not good to do. An engine needs to have a particular operating range to run efficiently. I know a Vortec runs perfect at 150-175. If you run full time you will cool too fast and draw on your power source as well. I have it set to come on at 155 and will cool it down to 120 quickly. This is all a mechanical fan clutch does. The fan may turn all the time but its at a free spin until the clutch heats up to a certain degree and then grips the fan to pull more air.

How much modification is involved to make the Mark 8 shroud fit our trucks?

That thing, assuming all the parts are in good working order, will cool just fine once you get the fan inside the shroud. Just like water, air follows the path of least resistance.

I usually take two pieces of aluminum angle (thin wall from like Lowes) bolt then to each side of the shroud, then cut to fit the top and bottom lips of the radiator, and drill and bolt in place.

This would be the fastest and cheapest repair to his prob. Electric is just my choice.
