radiator coolant overflow reservior?
Did stock 67-72 350's have overflow tubes for the radiator that went into reserviors containing coolant, or is ther only a tube for overflowing to the ground?

Nope, they spewed out on the ground. That is what the little hole is for in the inner fender, for the tube to run through. I have seen people use an extra windshield washer tank for an overflow, it works quite well.

What is the advantage of having a reservoir on these old trucks? In newer vehicles you fill the reservoir, but there is no "SUCTION" type think going on with these old ones...so why do that?
And wouldn't hot coolant melt one of these old washer fluid reservoirs? I am asking because the truck I am parting out does not have a reservoir, but the truck I drive...with the "mystery hose" does have a reservoir. Think I'll remove it, very ugly. |

Yes, these old trucks will suck it back in if not then the radiator would collapse due to the expansion and contraction and it doesn't get hot enough to melt the tank. So the advantage of having one would be not having to add coolant all of the time after it spews out on the ground.

There is a overflow option on these truck's that mounted the overflow tank on the driver's side core support. Someone had pic's as this topic was discussed not long ago when I had a similar question...

We use a washer bottle on the truck and drop it into the "teacup"
part of the fender where it is virtually out of sight. The radiator will suck the fluid back if you have the right radiator cap on it, (it has to be good for vacuum and pressure). Jim |

I use an old antifreeze jug stuck down next to the battery. It doesn't suck back, but it saves your fluid, and the environment

Got one on both of my trucks --72 chevy & 65 GMC step-you can purchase a kit that has everything you need for $13.00. (what I payed for mine). You get bottle, hose, bottle holder with mounting bracket and rad. cap. Works just like the late models.

Bought mine from my parts store.(local) Autozone,Advance etc. should have the samething as I have seen them but don't know their price but should still be less then $20. Check it out.

Overflow
I got this from the junk yard off a older monty carlo. It works great and for $5.00
Any tank will work though.

I checked mine when I got home, and I too have some sort of replacement or aftermarket coolant collector mounted near the battery.

Here is a pic of the dealer installed puke tank.
On mine, i used an extra washer bottel mounted on the other fender...kinda ballances everything out. |

Coolant Tank
Here's what I'm using. Got it from Jegs. Haven't hooked it up yet so I can't tell you how well it works. Anyone else use one of these octagon aluminum ones?

I thought the C20's and C30's had an actual factory installed overflow. Similar to the one from JEG's, only longer. I could have sworn I saw one on ebay also. I knew I should have bought it for $5.00

Got this at Schlepp Boys for 9.99. It'll do for now, still want the original washer bottle look. I'll pick one up at the next swap meet this spring if H&H is there.
Didn't come with a new cap, came with a neoprene washer you're supposed to add to your existing cap on a non-closed system. What cap are you guys using? |

You could get a coolant recovery system as a dealer installed option in 1972. Here is a picture of one:

Well my cap to the reservoir is broken, so I should probably get one of these aftermarket deals, since mine si not sealing at this point. Hard to determine a universal cap I guess, or do you mean the radiator cap? I am noting the reservoir cap.

Got mine mounted in the same place as in JQ-72's picture--you must have a big block as I see the power steering rev. & washer are in the same place as mine. sactoC10 we are taling about the rad. cap. Just buy one for a closed system. Any kind of cap will work on the bottle.

I have one in a 72 that has one that looks factory but there is nothing listed in the glove box it is on right side inner fender.
There is a number on the side I will try to get pcs. here is the number. I would like to know if it is. 15531513 2 |

It would not be listed in the glove box, it was a dealer installed item.
