Re: Fake SPID

I guess the actual condition of the truck dictates its price, as opposed to a SPID label.

Re: Fake SPID

From the pictures, it looks like a very nice truck. I would love to have it even if it was originally a longed. There must have been at least two people in the crowd who don't care about SPIDs on a truck.

Re: Fake SPID

It did sell for $24K. It is a great looking truck and sounded good too. It's unfortunate but I was never able to speak with the owner. I would have liked to talked.

cdowns is right about the shiney and fake rust but I guess I don't follow the world is ending statement - especially when the owner boasted about the SPID being in place and the fact it is a fake. The SPID being suspicious is why I started this thread.

Bottom line - nice truck. The buyer either is in for a surprise or he did his research and didn't care.

Here are some more photos -

Re: Fake SPID

I'm a little late to the party but would like to chime in anyway. Reference post 40, it's obvious, to me anyway, that vin plate has been removed and replaced. To bad they did not prep the the area well, maybe this was on purpose? I looks like the holes they drilled to remove the plate were to big and when they replaced the rivets they squeezed to hard and indented them. Very nice looking truck never the less. An auction buyer would be thinking 12-14k for paint, 2-3k for bright work, 1-2k for wheels & tires plus auction hype and there you have it, a decent price at 24k, never mind the cost to buy a clean truck to start with.

Re: Fake SPID

In light of the 10934 on both the SPID (in spite of the 115" wb notation) AND on the added-on-after-the-paint-job-to-replicate-original-firewall chalk marks, I have an issue with the seller's statement:

"115" SWB Documented with the original Build sheet". (EDIT, sorry, there was a paste error here originally!)

THIS statement flags this ad as false advertising for me, or, at least, making a rather bold statement when not really knowing the actual lineage of the truck.

Adding the original chalk marks back on when doing a frame-off is perfectly fine, if it's perfectly legit.

Without bashing, I think it's important to share with others some things that may not be obvious at first glance. That's how I learned - from folks on here and experience.

Unlike the truck that started this thread, this seller claims original swb status in the ad. Something is amiss: shortened swb with a 1/2 faked SPID? LWB cab on a SWB chassis - still with a 1/2 faked SPID? Or, a 1 in a trillion two-headed penny? (115" wb and 10934 model # on the same SPID). No way to really know.

Pretty truck, if you're paying the price for an original, beware. If you just love the truck, then there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, go for it. It is very nice. We could nit-pick various things (seat cover, bedliner sprayed over dents, etc), but it's got a sweet paint job and it's a nice redone truck. Drive the snot out of it and enjoy, but just know what it is before you pay a price that is too high. Again, value is in the eye of the buyer, but if that buyer is uninformed, the seller MAY try to sell this to him/her as an original swb truck when there are glaring disconnects in that theory.

I did notice that the convertible top is in good condition in the exterior description at the bottom of the ad. Sorry, couldn't help it, am sure it's a type/carryover from another ad.

Cheyenne Super Sport was one of the wordings that Chevy used for RPO YE9. Not as common as Cheyenne Super Equip, etc, but it is legit.

Re: Fake SPID

I apologize if I'm being anal, but the seller has not posted an "original build sheet". That's a SPID label.

Attached below is an example of a "build sheet".

It's one of those things that bugs me.

Might be a good way to keep track of what the various parts donors used were if I need to get replacement parts, or for the truck's next owner if I sell it.

Re: Fake SPID

Not sure the VIN on the door actually matches that on the SPID (hard for me to clearly read that on SPID). Of course, could be a door swap (no big deal) but someone was conscientious enough to neither remove it nor cover with paint.

..hahaha, did no one even read the spid??? Tinted windows, tilt wheel, abs? I'm pretty sure this spid is a joke
I actually intend on doing a photoshopped spid with some added line options for performance mods, shortbed conversion, and in dash cd/dvd lol

ABS = shock ABSorber

Tilt wheel and tinted windows are legitimate options for the time period.

I know this thread is older but that's not surprising. I saw worse trucks sell for that at Vegas last weekend. Longbeds with 40 year old patina'd chrome, small steering wheels, carpet dashes, the works. I don't know what was going on.

We all know the SPID is fake, so buy the truck for what it is. A chopped and shortened nice truck with a decent paint job. Just pay the longbed price.

Not a bad thought. Or just don't claim it to be original and make it obvious to someone who's researched these trucks for more than minutes. Like listing 95th anniversary promotional or 18" wheels. When I get around to putting in a cummins, the SPID will say something like 359 CU-IN DSL

Re: Fake SPID

My plan is to make a second SPID with the options I've added and have Chip put a (*) beside the ones I added and a line at the bottom that reads

(*) Installed during 2014 restoration; non-marked items are original factory options.

Or something along those lines. I won't attach it, just throw it in the glovebox, maybe display it if I show the truck. And the asterisk will stop a future owner (hopefully not for a long time) from exploiting the reproduction SPID.

Speaking of future owners, I told my wife that if something happened to me she'd have to sell my truck. She asked why. I said "Because you'll eventually remarry and I don't want some other a-hole driving my truck!". To which she responded "What makes you think I'd marry another a-hole?"

OK, not really, but it was the only "future owner" joke I had.

I've had a couple St Louis Supers, and they all had "Super Spor" typed out, with NO "t" at the end. I've also never seen a pic of a real SPID with a "t" at the end. The above SPID reflects that. The fake SPID has "Super Sport" spelled out which made it a fake in my book right away (well, that and the font) as a lot of people reproduce them this way.
