Big block, small block
Hello, new to thew forum. I am fortunate and actually have a choice, would like some thoughts. I have a 1967 C10 Arizona truck that i am going to restore, frame up. I have a 1971 350 V8 with a turbo 350 transmission, this is my choice. I also have a 1986 454 V8 with a turbo 400, newly rebuilt. I am going to build the small block and use that, truck will be a driver not a sitter. But which transmission? I will use truck to tow boats and medium size trailers. I am thinking turbo 350, 400 is heavier. Anyway, any thoughts?

Re: Big block, small block
I would use the 400 in place of the 350. will last longer when towing... or you could just drop in the 454-400 and all your problems would be solved

Re: Big block, small block
Definitely the turbo 400. I built up a small block one time. Dad's bone stock 454 vortec would way out pull my sbc. They both got horrible fuel mileage when towing.

Re: Big block, small block
yep, they both get poor mileage when working so you might as well have the power. Go big block and turbo 400. However, i would change the 400's first gear from the anemic 2.48-1 ratio to the deeper 2.75. It really helps the truck off the line under load.
