2005 gmc issues

I need a little advice. I recently picked up a 2005 GMC sierra 1500 with a 4.3 and a bad transmission. While I had the transmission out I pulled the engine and replaced the pan gasket and rear main seal (it has 214000 miles). It drives really well except when the RPMs rise abouve 3000. At that point it develops a miss and the tach jumps around and I here a clicking or ticking noise. It sounds similar to pre-ignition, but I don't think it is. Possibly electrical? I haven't changed the fuel filter yet, but I think my problem is electrical. Ignition module possibly?

Any suggestions?

Re: 2005 gmc issues

I have replaced the cap, rotor, wires and plugs when the engine was out. I am going to check the distributor shaft for excess rotational and side play. I have access to a scan tool also, so I'm going to check that out too.
