Pictures from my Grandfather Circa 1953
My grandfather was an engineer at White Motors. I apologize if this isn't the right place for these photos, but I thought people might be interested in them and maybe I could learn something about them. My grandfather died in 1957 and my grandmother held onto these pictures, which is how I ended up with them. They are of different brand trucks being tested on a frozen lakebed in Michigan.

Re: Pictures from my Grandfather Circa 1953
Those are great pictures. Thanks for sharing! I guess it's important to know how the truck performance compares on a frozen lake . Just kidding. I'm sure it has something to do with it being a convenient & cheap test ground that's there to use rather than building a course on land.
How about those overhead wipers on the GMC?

Re: Pictures from my Grandfather Circa 1953
Thanks for taking the time to post those great pics. Every couple years the Mack people come to our little town to do some type of testing, they bring a Prevost bus, a 3 axle tractor and dry freight and a strange looking 3 axle cabover with what looks like scale weights over the drivers. The cabover must be some kind of test bed for engines and transmissions maybe. They park at the bottom of our drive way and then climb 7,000 feet of elevation of highway up into the national forest, they are here 2 or 3 days.

Those are very cool pictures! I doubt any lakes freeze that solid anymore in Michigan.

Re: Pictures from my Grandfather Circa 1953
I'm not 100% sure it was Michigan, but it would make sense since the manufacturers were from that general area. Interesting stuff about the Mack testing too.

Re: Pictures from my Grandfather Circa 1953
I loved these 3000 Cabovers when I was a kit. A very friendly looking truck. I still love 'um. It would be great to have a single rear tractor lowboy or straight ramp truck to haul pickups on. With all the cabover custom car haulers and pickup conversions,I'm surprised more of these aren't used.
Here's a neat picture of a heavy (I hope) long wb tractor in Malibu(?) back in the day

Re: Pictures from my Grandfather Circa 1953
one of the home heating oil places still have a couple of those old cab over whites one round cab and one of the sixties square flat nose cabs with the original tanks.. they don't really run the trucks anymore but have em all spiffed up and keep them on the property.. I guess they show them or the owner keeps them as a tribute to his forefathers who ran the business generations ago...

I hoped you wouldn't mind me popping it into your thread, since it's one of his babies doing what it was designed to do back in the day on the real world proving ground. If I didn't that you before, thanks for sharing your photos and starting such a cool thread.
