Just double checking. PSGB

Hey All,
Is this the correct steering box for a 67 c10 2wd?

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par...er=858670_0_0_

Part Number: 7501

They didnt have one listed for a 67 so I changed the search to a 72. Just making sure that there arent any clearance issues before going forward.

Thanks!

Ryan

Welcome to the board!
Now does your truck have factory power steering?

A 67 pickup did not have an integral power steering box. The trucks used an external ram similar to a Corvette's. While later boxes can be adapted there is a frame clearance issue that needs to be addressed. Try doing a search on 67 powers steering.

Yes it has the same setup as vettes. I've already rebuilt the ps controll valve and that did not solve my issue. Hard left easy right-lots of play.

You can use that steering box,but the '67 frame lacks a dimple required for the box to fit properly. You'll need to either space it of the frame or heat and beat a dimple. Dry fit and you'll see what I mean.

Re: Just double checking. PSGB

Ah I have read those articles spelling out the simple process, I just forgot my year required the dimple. I was trying to avoid rebuilding the current box or dimpling the frame. Any drop in boxes on the market?

Re: Just double checking. PSGB

OK lets start off like this.
Are you wanting to replace the entire external ram system with a later integral steering box?
Like Tim confirmed there is a frame mod required without using spacers.

Are you looking for a replacement box for the existing system?
That box is as far as I know a standard manual steering box.
A quick look through the parts manual shows one part number for 67-72 C10-30 series trucks and a different for 68-72 C10-30 with power steering.
It would appear that the same box is used for both power and manual in 67 C10-30 or the power application box was not serviced.

Re: Just double checking. PSGB

I'd like to keep the original ram system.

I just want to replace the existing stock gearbox with a fresh one that will just drop in or plan b, rebuild the original that is currently on the truck.

Re: Just double checking. PSGB

So then a manual box intended for a 67-72 should be a drop in replacement for you.

Do you have both the 67 service and overhaul manuals? They can be downloaded here.

Re: Just double checking. PSGB

Dang! I wish I had known earlier, I just bought one of the manuals on ebay. This is great though. Thanks! I wish the Riviera forums did that.

OK so I need a manual box. Does anyone know a source? When I search for my year's "steering box" in Autozone, Orielys, or smaller companies websites, I'm finding no boxes listed.

Re: Just double checking. PSGB

Don't worry about the paper its great to have, the downloads are workable but I still like turning pages.

Not sure of a rebuit off the top of my head but I will think on it.

Here is a link to a post for a member down under that is trying to add a ram to his RHD truck that you might be intersted in.

Re: Just double checking. PSGB

Yeah, I used that thread to rebuild the power assist control valve. Guess I should lay out the history to date. The car, when parked or at slow speeds is hard left, easy right. I thought it was the PSCV, so I rebuilt it. When I put the valve back on, the lines got pinched so I replaced the two lines going from the PSCV to the ram. After bleeding, the problem persisted. That lead me to believe it is the gear box.

Are you suggesting that the ram is the culprit?

Sure does. About the book vs PDF on the 'puter. The 'puter will never replace the book for me. I'd rather have a floppy paper book with my black thumb prints that I can take to the project and lay about anywhere than funk up a laptop (or tablet) that needs the right place to lay and some shade to be able to see.

Oh,and what year Riviera? I had a '63 for many years. Loved that car and surely do miss it.

Re: Just double checking. PSGB

Nice looking girls there. My '63 was a 401 (which was a great motor!) till I got word of a Riviera I could grab for free. Got there and was disappointed to see it was a '65. I was after spare trim/interior parts. It was primed with no exterior trim/emblems. I popped the hood to discover it was a GS! I grabbed the car and stuck that 425 dual quad in my '63 and the 401 went to good use in a '65 SWB GMC.
Oh yeah, ram assist power steering...Let us know how that works out. I'm thinking pretty sweet!
