wheel and tire combo

Guys,I am going for a "rock-a-billy" look on my truck. So I am using steel 8 inch corvette rallys and BFG radial TAs...I was going to do 7" inch on the front and 8" on the rear, but this look, I am sort of liking....J may power coat them black and use a "bullet" looking center cap... I know the "rake" is too steep, but other than that, looking for opinions....

Re: wheel and tire combo

A little lower in the rear, black wheels, chrome bullits and lugs. I would have them do the steps black at the same time, loose the chrome in the middle look and stick with chrome front and rear bumpers. I. Like the theme your using

I am with you....I was actually thinking of having the steps powder coated "satin" black.....And was thinking of having some "faded faux" looking numbers, stickers and sponsors......I would also like to have the bumpers smaller, like a couple of inches removed horizontally then welded back....so they become about 5 inches wide but stay the same length and look.....has somebody done that?

Re: wheel and tire combo

Do you have enough clearance from the axle to the frame to DE arch the rear springs, or like was mentioned above just try removing a few leafs.
Good to see your truck finished!

I bought the same wheels for my truck, used the small police caps on it.

I don't know what "de-arching" is...Could you explain....I can only drop the back about 2 inches.... which I think would be good. And it's not quite finished....no interior needs carpet, headliner and new seat covers.....also camber is still about an inch off..

De-arching is flattening the springs by removing the arch the spring ends get closer to the ground, lowering the truck.

I am a bit confused about camber being an inch off though.
Caster and camber are measured in degrees.

Re: wheel and tire combo

I dont know what rockibilly look is but I am using the same rims and caps, If you want shallow trim rings on front that are curved on edges look at the early GMC Safari Van will fit and for a deeper look on rear corvettes fit and are rounded versus the camaro or nova that are flat. I dont know how far you are from Phoenix but there is an Axle Spring company in Glendale Az (Glendale Spring) they can de-arch for the rear spring and it will lower the rear about 1 to 2 inches and very reasonable in price thats is where I had my rear spring done, by the way nice truck!

Re: wheel and tire combo

Arizona Spring on Grant Rd East of Stone Ave. can dearch your springs here in Town, if there is no one in S. V..

What is keeping the front from being aligned? Scotts has four corner adjustmet

Thanks for the info about de-arching...I will check into it....you are right about the front end camber....I am "eye balling" it as I have been, when I used to be a "crew chief" for a late model (limited) at TRP...I used a crude level and have found that the thing, after adjusting the four corners, still has too much positive camber....I believe that I will have to discuss this with Scotts and see if the top A arms could be cut by about a 1/2 inch......so, I'll see....

I am a redneck from Kansas displaced to Phoenix. Now you got my attention! If you get the ass down a bit the only thing that would make it look better would be a block long power stand smoking down the street! Truck looks great, keep it up!

Re: wheel and tire combo

I love Rockabilly music and I can't picture it with regards to wheels. However, I do love old school and that is what I consider my combination to be (some people even call me a redneck ... that's really what I strive for!).

Re: wheel and tire combo

As I'm not into the "look how I screwed up my great looking truck to make it look old and haggard" I'd have to say pass on the faus faded numbers and flat paint on the steps. Painting numbers or class designations on a car or truck that hasn't actually raced in the past with those numbers so others or the owner will think that it is a "race rig" is rather lame to me. That might be from seeing a barrage of photos every year of posers going to Bonneville and painting a big white number on the side of their primered beater with a class designation that might have fit some car at the drags in the 60's but isn't close to correct for the car they painted the stuff on.

If that truck were mine I'd get some nifty small caps (the bullet ones would look great, some really narrow trim rings and paint the wheels black or something besides the out of the box gray and polish and wax that black paint until it looked like you could fall in it and drown call it good. Just about every task force truck that has really spun my wheels in the past 40 years has been shiny jet black and I even sold the 48 once intending to build one but traded back for it a year later.

Thanks for info on the alignment. I may take it there but it needs a shorter A arm on the top (or a longer one on the bottom)...so I need to contact Scotts at some point. I will finish it when I get theses wheels powered coated and all done....should be within 2 weeks.

From Studying Scott's front ends they will take a bit longer to adjust than most front end setups but should hold an alignment without issues until you wear them out unless you hit something so hard that you bend part of the suspension.

I think so too. To make an adjustment on one of those, you have to take the upper control arm off and change the washer stack.

Yes, and on both sides and re pete many times until it is exactly were you want it for castor and camber. Like he said it will stay there until you change something, like ride height or tire size!
