New transmission, nothing!
So i recently put in a freshly rebuilt th350 in my 76 k10. I primed the TQ, made sure the TQ could spin freely before bolting to flywheel, and still the transmission wont engage.
I initially put in 4 qt of fluid, ran through the gears, got no response. Then added another, and repeated. In total I added 7 qt plus the 1 I primed the TQ with and still Ive got not response in any gear. The TQ is spinning just fine with the engine. The dip stick will say full then once it is ran it will say empty, so I'm guessing the pump is working. Is there just not enough fluid to get pressure yet? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Edit: the transfercase is in drive, I double checked by removing the driveshaft. Last edited by fostrem; 06-12-2013 at 08:45 PM. |

I also pulled a cooler line to check to see if the pump is working. It is pumping out a lot of fluid with what seems like good pressure.

Re: New transmission, nothing!
If the trans and torque convertor are new then I believe they should take somewhere between 11-12 quarts. I always jack the vehicle up on all fours before starting. I add about 6-7 quarts before starting. Then I start it and put in gear and start adding the remainder until I get to about 10 1/2 quarts. Then I start checking until full. I should add that someone should be sitting in the drivers seat just in case something happens then they can be on the brake. I usually let it run through the gears a couple of times before final check.

Re: New transmission, nothing!
Just to add a third opinion, yes, more fluid. I replaced a TH350 transmission a couple years ago, and I seem to recall about 12 quarts total.

Last I checked the transfer case didn't have a "drive" and how would removing the driveshaft check it? Posted via Mobile Device Posted via Mobile Device

Re: New transmission, nothing!
The problem was not nearly enough fluid. It took about 12 qt. thanks for the advice.
By "drive" i meant the transfer case was not in neutral, it was engaged. Thanks for all the help. |

Re: New transmission, nothing!
yes because a 2wd trans is no different in the transmissions except for the tailshaft.
majority of your older trans take 11-12 quarts like stated. i normally add 7 quarts and the converter and jack the vehicle up and add another 4 quarts and run it through the gears off the ground for a good 30 minutes or so to let it warm up and let the fluid get everywhere then i drop it on the ground and check fluid and add accordingly.
