Classic Vehicle Insurance question

Hello, I’m new to this page, and my 71 GMC k2500 is my first restoration project. I’m the second owner of this truck, and I’m doing a pretty in-depth restoration project. Body off frame style. I’ve looked around for quotes for insurance and I’m having a hard time finding something reasonable or that will work for me. Many of the companies offer a "classic vehicle insurance" but is limited to only bright sunny days for car shows and cruises, and must be stored in secure garage. Like most of us, we love to drive our trucks, sometimes tow a trailer, show them off etc etc. So who is a good insurance company to go through that wont tie my hands on how I will drive MY truck??

I have State Farm. I think I'm limited to 7500 miles a year.

It's call between a rock and a hard place. All plans are full of pitfalls.

Collector insurance or "agreed value" policies all have restrictions on driving and storage. Most plans will not insure a "project". They also want you to have a newer, fully insured, daily driver. Many people use these policies and get away with driving outside the restrictions but there is always a risk that something might happen and you won't be covered.

Stated value policies written by some regular insurance carriers aren't worth the paper they are written on. In the event of total loss they are going to depreciate an "old truck" severely.

The other option is just put some cheap liability and uninsured motorist coverage and drive the vehicle like you want.

I'll probably be driving more then that a year. I'll need at least 10k a year. Ive continued looking, and I found this, Hagerty Classic Car insurance will insure my truck for $316 a year. I don’t know to much about insurance, but it looks like the policy is full coverage with me putting my "Guaranteed Value" at $15,000 driving around 12,000 miles a year for $32 a month. Seems kind of low. Are they legit? Not sure if I’m just to use to paying insurance for newer cars.

This Hagerty Insurance states they dont have the limitations like most people do. Check it out, I dont know to much about insurance. I've just never heard of them.

I have fixed 2 vehicles that were insured with Haggerty. One was a 57 T-bird that hit a deer. The other a 66 Jaguar XKE. They were about $15,000, and $10,000 to fix. They were EXTREMELY easy to work with. No questions asked, and no grief getting paid. I don't have any experience with any others, but I would give a big "thumbs up" to Haggerty!

I have Hagerty also...no claims (Thank GOD!)
but they were great to work with, answering all my questions regarding mileage limitations, dusk-to dawn limitations, etc.

I broke down last year and had to wait 3 hours for a tow (not their fault, it was the tow company's fault). After I called Hagerty about my ordeal they covered the tow bill.

I've had the same good experience with Hagerty's as others have stated. Had an antique road sign blow of my garage wall during a storm and take a 1" x 2" chunk of paint from my passenger side door. Took pictures, got a quote from the shop of my choice, and they had a check to me before I could even get the truck into the shop.

Fuel pump went out last year and I had hagerty and they covered the wrecker (flat bed) within 50miles .. They even called back to make sure everything was ok

I've had Hagerty ins for 13 years. Collected once when I blew out a front tire and wrecked into a ditch. They paid in full no questions asked.

grundy had some problems a while ago when their underwriter exercised an option and took over their classic car program...after screwing things up they gave it back to grundy...looks like they're trying hard to make amends...they were cheaper than hagerty(150 yr for 2 vehicles,unlimited mileage,10000 and 12000 agreed values). my truck doesn't have a bed on it (sent pictures) and there was no problem at all

Well, I dont know what to say. I guess my problem I had today when I called, is my 71 is going to be my daily driver and the ONLY vehicle under my name. According to them, I need to have another vehicle that is my "daily driver" before they could cover me.

I give Hagerty a big thumbs up too. Very reasonable rates, very easy to work with.

I have Haggerty. never had a claim yet, but the price is reasonable and you can customize the insurance to your needs. My homeowners and Auto are through Allstate, and it turned out my Allstate rep also handles Haggerty, so it was a no brainer for me.

My truck is listed in "project"status, and the value of it grows by a certain amount each month until the project is completed.

If you live in the country you can get away with farm truck insurance. Its cheap but you are limited on how many miles you can get on the truck every year. For shows you get a modern truck and trailer and haul it.

I have Hagerty on all of my classics except my trucks ,they require them to be garaged when not in use and also have to have a regular vehicle insured as your daily .I have had 2 claims with Hagerty and they were great to deal with. Grundy says they will insure classics as a daily driver with some restrictions but I have not researched that any further as my truck is still in the bodyshop.

Another thumbs up for Hagerty here, been using them for 10 years. No claims, but have found their rates reasonable, their employees knowledgeable, and their coverage fantastic.

I have Heacock Classic for the past 6 years. For me, they've been much better in price and service than the policies I've had in the past from Grundy or Hagerty.

$25K policy on my 1963 Pontiac Tempest, 7K miles per year and $216/year.
