Re: 66 C10- SWB V8 Auto AC- "Cropwell"

I love this truck!
The color and the patina are absolutely perfect. Now that the body is "done", it's time to get cracking on the motor and suspension!

Re: 66 C10- SWB V8 Auto AC- "Cropwell"

I had a little time today to get crackin' on the truck. Today's goal: all old fluids out. Thoughts:
- should gas look like ATF fluid?
- I have never seen oil that black
- put on some frickin' rubber gloves

My plan was to drain the gas from the tank and install a 1/4 ball cock valve with two short rubber lines. I did this on my GMC and it works awesome. It is a very simple install.

This:

Goes right here:

I pulled the sending unit and whoa baby! it was filthy with a tar black sooty coating. That was foreshadowing for the condition of the interior of the tank.

The tank must come out!

Next, I poured out the most pungent smelling gas my schnoz has ever smelt. It was the color of burnt ATF fluid. Oh yeah, for some reason I never put on rubber gloves and now I have to go meet my wife and kids at a B-day party smellin' like funk.

Re: 66 C10- SWB V8 Auto AC- "Cropwell"

A fan-freakin-tastic update:
It's ALIVE! After 7 years of sleeping, the 283 has woken up. Good buddy, neighbor, and board member (K5Addiction) came over to give me a hand. We cranked and cranked with nothing but white smoke occasionally puffing out the carb. When I bought it, the PO said it ran fine when he parked it 7 yrs. I assumed (mistake) that I the timing was fine. Wrong, it was exactly 180 degree's out. After determining TDC and re-stabbing the distributor, it fired right up. I was so geeked, I did a few pull-ups on the carport, in celebratory fashion!

Here it is:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7_APEACesM

The exhaust is one full length tube with a OLD glasspack and the other tube cut off right in front of the rear axle.

More updates to come

That's fantastic! Sounds real good. Surprised you could run it without the valve covers. I expected to see oil going everywhere.

OK great. That means the oil pump and bearings are in good shape! By the way how did the inside of the gas thank look. Did you do in cleaning or put a coating in it?

I started cleaning that filth out and stopped. It was beyond getting clean with my limited resources. I marched up to the computer and bought a new one, deliver to my door (TN) from CA for $150. The fit was perfect. I got it from www.carpartsdiscount.com.

So the new parts installed so far are:
- rebuilt Rochester 2G
- alternator
- starter
- battery
- fuel tank, sender, grommet, filler hose
- glove box
- oil, filters
- cap, points/condenser, plugs, wires
- belts
- air filter
Keep it crankin'

Re: 66 C10- SWB V8 Auto AC- "Cropwell"

As the school year is upon me, I am a teacher, the time under, around, lean on the truck seems to be dwindling. Baby steps now. A little here, little there.

progress:

Split the lines, with a new dual master cylinder.

New tires mounted up on fresh painted steelies. I love me some steelies! especially with dog dishes, wait for it.....

bam. ebay find.

I drop both lower control arms to get the springs out. I cut 1 1/2 coil off each.

To look like this:

Now on to the brake drums, totally uncharted waters for me.

Until next time,

Dirty nails

Love it! I wish the projects my teacher-wife stressed about right before school were like this one. Instead she's had me re-finishing furniture for 3 weeks.

When this truck is ready to rock you'll be the first to know. I'll either text you or lightin' the tires up in front of your house. (I think I am the neighborhood redneck). Ha!

I thought the 283/powerglide trans. fluid pan would be a breeze to drop, but NO and no drain plug. Come on GM! I have to unbolt the trans crossmember and shimmy it back to get to the rear pan bolts.

Every neighborhood has got to have a redneck. I've fully embraced that I am my neighborood's. I say a one wheel peel by K5's house is the only way to go

Re: 66 C10- SWB V8 Auto AC- "Cropwell"

My "lark" time, as my awesome wife puts it, has dwindled down to a weekend warrior status. Therefore the progress is little, but still have managed to:

- install 2" lowering blocks. The original U-bolts were a bearcat to get out!
- rebuilt both of the rear drum brakes. Mighty intimidating, but not too bad once I dove in.
- split the brake lines with a new dual MC. *hint- a long stick lighter is your best friend when trying to loosen those stubborn brake flare fittings.
- installed all new rubber brake lines.
- drained, what was left, of the 7+ yr. old tranny fluid. No drain plug!!! Installed one of those too.
- and the highlight came Sat. morning....

Dog Dish Caps!

I cannot wait to get this thing on the ground and fired up... Banana fingers crossed.

Re: 66 C10- SWB V8 Auto AC- "Cropwell"

Last Thursday was a milestone..... It MOVED ON ITS OWN!

After throwing in the towel on the brake bleeding fiasco, I needed to get it on the ground for a moral victory. I had a good idea of what it would look like in my head, but was even more geeked to see it with my own eyes.

Static drop is: 1 1/2 coil off front and TJ jeep springs with 2" lowering blocks
Tires: 235/75R15 all around

K5Addiction stopped by to join in my celebration. The nothing but smiles and high fives!

It will be off to the "brakeman" and then to the exhaust shop. I order a pair of 30" Brockman Mellowtone glasspacks. I am really excited to hear them.

Bark 'em if ya got 'em.

Smaller diameter exhaust pipe (2") will make the glass packs bark louder with the 283.
