Saddle tank question

I have dual saddle gas tanks on my k20. My fuel gage doesn't work on those ones but does work on the one behind the seat. I couldn't find any wires going to the saddle tanks, so before I drop them I guess I am just asking if factory saddle tanks have floats and fuel senders in them.

Pretty sure there were no factory saddle tanks -- your dual tanks are most likely aftermarket, possibly dealer installed, maybe when the truck was new. But not OEM.

To your question -- some had floats & senders, some did not. Mine were made by Travel Tanks and came with floats & senders, which still work through a 3-way toggle switch mounted at the bottom edge of the dash.

It may be possible to retrofit floats & senders into your tanks. It is handy to have a working fuel gauge for each tank.

when I built custom tank for the bed of my truck I used the stock float sender out of the tank behind the seat just bent the rod to adjust it for proper empty and full. to bad I left it sitting empty to rust when I stored the truck for a decade.

my sending unit broke though so I rigged up the one from my behind the seat tank which I got rid of.

most aftermarket saddletanks dont have senders though from what I saw. And If they did there would definately be a switch to go bewteen the main and aux tanks to the sender.

Yes, there was a factory option for a single auxiliary tank. The OP was asking about dual saddle tanks.

Most after market saddles are sender capable but some are covered with block off plates instead of having senders installed. So it's hit and miss so to speak.

Brown, I have two types of saddle tanks. One style fills in the wheel well and doesn't have senders. The other style I have, fills through the bed side and does have senders. I used the tanks with senders in my '72 and just put the other pair in the basement. Both pairs that I have were made by the same supplier in Colorado. They were a dealer installed option as far as I know. Roy

Mine fill up from the side of the bed too. I have no idea where they came from though. I looked again and I don't think they have senders in them. Kind of stinks not knowing the level but, I bet I can tell when they hit empty on my own.

I didn't know I had block offs till I dropped them. Mine fill in the wheel wells. I plan on putting senders before they go back in.

Hey everyone, thanks for you insight. I found an old sticker on the inside of the gas door on the side of the bed. They said "Travel Tank, Travel Accesories Oakland Cal. I was wondering if anyone knew if they were still around.

I just googled them and nothing came up that matched, so I would say probably not.
