Re: 71 to 70 Axle swap

The earlier rearends are a narrower width. The axles are not interchangeable. Swapping to 5 lug requires swapping entire rearend or buying conversion axles.

70 could had either the narrow or the wide housing...measure your housing, as you may have the wider one. Welcome to the message board!

Re: 71 to 70 Axle swap

71-72 axles are 31 5/16 long if you measure from the mounting surface (where the wheel would meet the axle on that outer edge) all the way to the end of the splines.

67-~~70 are 30 1/2 at that same point. Just an easy way to know what you have vs. what will swap.

If you lay under the truck and measure from the inner edge of one brake backing plate to the other, the later rear end will be 57". The early one will be 55.5" Again, just an easy way to tell without taking the wheels off or axles out to measure as I mentioned above.

If you have the 57" rear housing originally (highly possible) then the 71-72 5 luggers will swap, no problem. If it's 55.5", Id go to Moser and just get some new ones.

Re: 71 to 70 Axle swap

I assume my leaf spring 70 must have had the wider housing cause its axles swapped with a 5 lug 73 , so you're not just limited to 71/72

Re: 71 to 70 Axle swap

When I bought my 1970 it had 6 lug. I bought a 71 parts truck that had 5 lug and disc brakes. The axles were same lenght and switched out NO problem.

Re: 71 to 70 Axle swap

ive been wondering how big of a pain it would be to have mine just re-drilled to 5lug. Pretty sure it can be done locally and hopefully cheap.
