12V to Coil ? Non HEI

I ripped the entire wiring harness out of the 71 K-10 this week, I have never seen such a hack job before ? The PO installed a 110 Inverter to power a camper and it fried the harness . Yesterday I installed a good + and - battery cable, and ran a jumper wire to S terminal on starter to see if engine would turn over ? It did Whoopie ! Question, Can I run 12V straight to coil to see if it will run ? Or do I need to step it down to 9V ? If so How ?.....Thanks

Yes you can test it at 12 volt. It usually takes a few hours of running before the points burn up. DAMHIK

I had a '70 Bel Air with a 250 and points ignition. Ran great for years and then it started cutting out at high rpm. I mean, you'd be merging onto the highway with the six pumpin' for all it was worth and it would just die.

Pull over to the side and it would fire up and drive again - as long as you stayed away from the high end.

After much trouble shooting, we hooked a meter to the coil and went for a drive. Voltage stayed around 7 during most driving but spiked to 12 during high rpm. It turns out the resistor wire was getting old and shot.

I solved it by dropping an HEI in and running 12 volts to the coil...

It would be best to hook a resister in the wire going to the coil. You can buy one for the late 50,s cars or trucks for a few bucks. It will save damaging the points & possibly the coil.
