Question about emblems...

So I rescued a '71 Custom 20 from a pasture, Got it to start, found the original carb was in desperate need of a rebuild, and am working on getting it driving, which is basically wheels, tires, shocks, and brakes, and probably chasing some wiring gremlins.

There is one thing I want to do, which is restore the factory options, it was repainted, and most of the emblems are missing. It was built with Z81, and Z62 options, along with a lot of others.

I would like to replace the original emblems, and have found repops of most, but there are two spots that have me stumped..

There are four holes on each side of the cowl that look like emblem mounts, if anyone knows what should go there, and where I can find them, please let me know.

Re: Question about emblems...

I'm not a hundred percent sure, not factory though. .. maybe spotlight holes, or aftermarket mirrors?

Re: Question about emblems...

Not factory, but, since it's a 3/4 ton, it may have hauled a cab-over camper at one time. It was very common to mount an extended shock absorber apparatus between the cowl and the front the part of the camper over the cab. They were somewhat helpful in reducing bounce from highway expansion joints. I used some on my 69 when it was new. The brand I had were called Bounce Aways but there were also other brands. Mine used different style brackets on the cowl. Similar units are still sold today, but mount much more securely in the same general area without damaging sheet metal.

I'm just about positive this is the answer since I recall seeing the brackets in that location on other trucks and thinking that was a more secure attachment point on the cowl than mine.

Here's a picture of mine when it was new (ignore the date on the picture) that shows the Bounce Aways mounted.

Re: Question about emblems...

Sometimes dealerships like to place their emblems on the cowl.

Re: Question about emblems...

I had a cowl with a dealership tag with 4 holes though as well the would rivet or screw them on but most only had it on one side. There is no emblem that goes there though

Re: Question about emblems...

Looks like camper supports to me. Back in the 70s, cab over campers were very popular.

Re: Question about emblems...

concur - camper supports - made to bolt a plate on the sheet metal and spread the weight load of the strut attached to it. I've never seen them spaced out that far, but can't imagine a dealer tag would be that humongous....
