Battery cables and battery choices
I am needing a new battery. The old one was in the truck when I purchased it. It is now 8 years old and struggles to spin the starter, dropping down to less than 8 volts when cranking. I used to work in a shop, so I understand voltage and amps, so the best I can describe its behavior is of a tree that has a rotten core. Hollow inside, but strong bark on the outside.
This battery is side-terminal and I wonder if I should change over to top terminal, just because that's what my 1966 C-10 would have had in it back in 1966? The side-terminal design lessens the acid corrosion at the terminal, and I want this to be trouble-free. I know the Group 24 will fit, but an option that presented itself when I called about batteries was a dual terminal battery, one with side and top terminals. Ooh!! The dual is a group 78 and is a bit shorter, so it will still fit. My question to the forum is: which battery and which terminal? Group 24 is top only, Group 78 is dual, thus the choice. Sometimes we put to much thought into the simplest things. How are you building your truck? Original or all out tech?

I am trying to keep it looking as stock as possible, but making improvements where they make sense. I have upgraded the wiring, all the way to the tail lights. HEI is pending, as is a toss-up between QuadraJet or FI.
I know the battery is at its end, straining to get those pesky electrons to the starter. I may end up jumping the silly thing, but this will be a daily/weekly driver for me. John

you are already wired for side i would stick with that ;it is better then post ... you are NOT making a showroom floor model.... I have a 63 that i am doing suspension upgrades and diesel But the outside and in the cab will look all original

Thank you for sharing the idea of staying with the side terminal connections. Corrosion is less on side mount and since I already have OE type cables (molded cable ends), I don't need the top mount for any reason that I can justify. The old battery was tested and was on the border between good and bad, just shading the good side. It is now a core and the new battery is installed. That starter zings now. Music to my ears. John
