Auminum caps?
Everybody dig deep here, were any of the 64-66 hubcaps, or van caps, especially 8 lug caps, come in aluminum? Got a guy saying he has some. I have 3 pairs of clip type caps, and never heard of them being made in aluminum.

Re: Auminum caps?
I've seen plenty of newer ones, but never one from this series of trucks. Before spending any money I'd want to see them to confirm they are the correct style.

Re: Auminum caps?
Well i thought someone said that some were made of brass. And if this guy put a magnet to it, and it was brass, i could see how he could be confused. He seemed pretty confident in his conviction. He was touting how hes parted out many of these trucks. But i didnt want to argue with him, so i just let it go. Im pretty sure they didnt make them in aluminum.

Re: Auminum caps?
The original factory chrome ones for at least into 66's were brass and then chrome plated. You can tell by going to the backside and it will have a yellowish cast to it where the plating is thin. If not noticeable, lightly scratch a spot on the rear surface and the brass will show up yellow gold. Then you could also see splits or cracks where brass caps are stretched over the knubs with age. If anyone looked closely at that black 66 CST with 6 miles at Lambrechts most or all of the hubcaps had a crack about an inch on the knub sides on those original caps. The brass was used till 72 from what my chrome metal plater/polisher said. Then they were stainless till 77/78 when they went to aluminum and a more flatter style hubcap.
This said the white painted ones were all steel hubcaps.

Re: Auminum caps?
A chrome plated steel hubcap is a very common upgrade by a chrome plating shop over the years and easy to spot as they will stick a magnet right away. Also will show rust spots too.

Re: Auminum caps?
I cut up a repop Its brass and chromed like originals. They have the same marking on the inside like the original ones after chroming To bad they cant make the bowtie correct.
