Is this really happening (street racing)?

Check this out. The truck is wicked fast butttt.....does this really happen on public streets in LA or are they blocked off abandoned streets?

Can anyone chime in on this? Warning on language at the end.

Not sure about this specific race but.....there's lots for street racing in SoCal late at night. Mostly in unincorporated areas.

I can second that, we used to attend the races in rural Tulare County when I was in high school. Now living in Kern County on the outskirts of town, we can sit in the living room Friday/Saturday nights around 2am and hear them running every weekend.

It is very real and happens all over the country. This is huge and the wagers are Vegas style. Where I live near Detroit these guys are serious and they have roadies that help them arrange everything from collecting cash to watching for police to loading and unloading the car off the trailer. This is all done late at night while most people are sleeping.

Been out on a few nights in DFW for races like that, usually have a few lookouts, and at least one person with a scanner listening for radio traffic.

The races are real, the wagers are big, and the consequences are even bigger.

Part of the reason I don't go anymore.

It's common especially in areas where the police have more pressing issue to attend to. We used to race at industrial park areas as young adults. Wide deserted roads and would set races up as safe and smart as we could. Still didn't make it right but the police used to let us sort of police ourselves until it spilled into streets and crashes started to happen. Some were fatal. I can't believe the danger these guys put other drivers in when they go all out like that in traffic.

It is real! In probably every large city (and smaller communities) across the country.
Its not usually advertised--except for the "in crowd" in that specific area because its illegal---Everywhere, but you can bet it happens bout every week.

I know that there is a group of street racers in this area. I even know most of them personally since they will come in with their cars to get parts from us. Thankfully, they do most of this on quiet back roads where they will only hurt themselves.

That looks like "Compton Dragway". There was a "documentary" on the Discovery channel or something like that. There are some serious people racing there for big money. Trouble is we had a track (Fontana, but they closed it) where people could race and these guys preferred racing on the street. Go figure.

The big boys have big toys! I think most of the real serious dudes could do fine at a track, but like has been said, fewer and fewer tracks out there.

I saw the documentary mentioned (or one similar) and they were saying that it's actually giving the kids something to do besides be in the gangs. Despite the inherent dangers, that has to be a positive thing.

I went to a few races when I was a teen in SoCal, about 74 or 75 or so. This was before cell phones and all that, so it was all word of mouth. You needed to be where that word might come and it would be like "Such and such time at the 700 block of whatever road" and it was a mad rush to get there in time to see the race and get away before the cops came. And they always came.

Happens frequently in the DC area, particularly in PG county. Groups of motorcyclists will block a roadway DURING RUSH HOUR and drag race their bikes and pull stunts as well. Cops are always called and they never show up. I have been stuck twice this year behind their "road block" around 5pm. It is sad when you call 911 to report and then get passed on to 3 different police offices (State, PG County, and the Sheriff) with not one of them accepting responsibility for a major route exiting Washington DC in Maryland.

We grew up going to the street races around Dallas. We would go to the track and hang out, making a few passes during the night, making sure everything was running right, then head out about 12-1am to the street races. We'd normally watch the sun come up the next morning. At that point in life I made a living in other nefarious ways, but street racing and side betting on races contributed heavily to my income.

I saw lots of crashes over the years. Most were pretty bad since the cars were very fast but utilized very little safety equipment. No tech on the street.

I can still drive around Dallas and find spots in industrial areas were it's obvious by the black marks in the road that some amount of street racing still goes on. If I wasn't settled down with a wife and kid, I might still go hang out. Some good times back in the day that I wouldn't trade for anything. And if I had a do-over for my youth, I'd do it all over again.

Don't get me wrong, I do not advocate illegal activity. The way it was done back in the day was vastly different than some of the scenes today. We even had a Deputy Sheriff that would come out and watch everyone race. The Dallas Police had bigger things to do than harass us, until the gang punks started showing up and fighting each other (with the occasional gunfight thrown in). That's when the police got much more involved, and we bailed on the whole thing.

Large and Hardcore scene for cars and bikes here in KC. They used to run near a plant I worked at. My boss used to be big in it. It's on a big upswing since they closed KCIR.
