Another father/son`s project find

Well we stumbled across this really nice 72 that a guy started 13 years ago and never completed due to health problems, so it had sat parked for the past 4 years behind a barn. He had put a 68 front clip and doors on and a new 350 GM crate engine so a few other things before he passed away. His father was greatful to have it go to good home so the boys and I have another project to do. Looks like it might be my youngest son`s truck, he`s 13 his older brother has been working on the 72 for a few years and this next March he turns 16. Looks to be a good start, almost no rust we can find I think he put some nice parts on her so they will be busy this weekend cleaning so we can get it started up again after changing all the fluids and such.

Very cool. The po actually did some work to it that will get you closer to your end goal, vs stuff you have to tear out or redo (which is more the norm as you know)

Good to see your kids involved. I've been giving my 13 year old parts for a while now, so he can put them on his build in a couple years, but sometimes it sure feels like he could care less. Oh well, the deal is that he has to earn half the price of the truck on his own, and keep his grades up. I sometimes wonder if he'll be able to pull that off...

Its really great to have them enjoy these trucks and appreicate all the poeple you meet along the way, I will adnit that the grades can be a challenge with any distraction but so far, were all A`s and a couple of B`s so I`ll keep my fingers crossed. They both know that school comes first and anything below a B gets them grounded from the shop until it comes up!

Good point. It also appears to have a 67/68 tailgate (no holes at the bottom for lower trim), as well as 68 door panels.

yes and 68 doors as well, the boys are out cleaning it up right now, has a bunch of extra parts with it too, looks like they will have a few parts to sell here on the board to fund the project!

After a long day of powerwashing, and digging all the brambles out of her we rolled her into the shop and drained the oil, next is to change all the rest of the fluids, clean out the gas tank and add a in-line fuel filter but cleaned up pretty nice so far.

no he had filler the markers in the bed, its a 72 cab and bed with 68 doors and front clip, 68 tailgate that like to catch on the sides when you close it.

I think the boys want to drop her down a bit, any suggestions on drop? Thinking a 4/2 coil drop. Can we just do springs and shocks to get a nice stance and maintain the ride on a budget? I see brothers is having a sale until the 31st and the boys want to save a few bucks. We picked up a set of nice 8in rallys with caps and rings so now just need a set of tires and a drop, oh and get her running of course!

Lop a coil to a coil and a half in front, 2" block in back. Easy peasy, good beginner project. Note that the coil pigtails in the front are actually keyed top and bottom. If you chop a straight one round of coil, it'll line up. Anything else It'll not want to sit right on the top spud. I cut 11/2 coils and just opened the top pigtail up with a torch. Good lookin' boys, they look stoked!

Thanks for the tip, they really want to change out to drop springs and it will be a good learning experience, as well as it looks like one spring is bent, I just need to figure out what drop now.

We have been plugging away and the clean up, rening is almost ready to fire, inner fenders out and off to sand blast as well as the old rear bumper, the PO had welded 100lbs of old steel to it as well as the frame, I dont know what he had been hauling years ago so cut off all that and lots of grinding to make it nice again, found a set of 8" ralleys and the boys sanded and painted them with a nice set of new rubber. waiting for a 3/5 drop in the mail and the clips to put the freshly painted grill trim on, we painted the grill trim, bezels, wheel and rear bumper the same gray. Here`s a few pics of the progress.

Well the boys spent more time getting the old girl clean, I spent more time cutting off more steel welded all over the place, should be 200lbs lighter! They have the air cleaner all sproused up, sanded it down and primed it and went with satin black, cleaned and painted the master cylinder and undercoated the cab. they put all the wheels and tires on just to see what it will look like and measured the drop which will be a 5/3 that should be here later this week. Lots more little things to do before we try starting her up but good progress so far.

Yep, your right 67 front clip, found the build sheet in the seat tonight! marker welded in on the passenger rear qtr. also.
