My dad told me this one:

When taking something apart take a picture of it with a poloroid (or digital camara for the new century) so you can put it back together the way it was....such as brake drums.

Ain't joking about the fire extinguisher....my wife tried lighting the kitchen on fire a few weeks ago...had to break out teh extinguisher to put it out (made a big mess). Went out and bought a replacement that night.

If you've hotwired your car/truck and it stalls, make sure your in park before finding the problem

wrench with surgical gloves.... I love em-keeps the gunk out of the fingernails!!

On carb-vs-FI.... I worked on the northstar team (cadillac 4.6) back in the early 90's, I know FI inside and out. I like carbs- keep it simple!

Allright, Dan72 reminded me of this one. Always disconnect the negative clamp first!

Dont allow your truck to be non operable for any longer than is possible, dont let it get inoperable unless you have to.

Always convert to HEI

Always disconnect that battery before working on pretty much anything.

Wash your hands frequently.

Double check lug nuts any time you've had a wheel off.

Dont touch that pit bull thats foaming at the mouth. Know what I mean?

O.K. I got a few other pretty good ones.

1.Soak the rusty old manifold bolts and brake line fittings repeatedly with liquid wrench or PB DAYS before you are going to tackle the job.

2.Sharp blows on the wrench or ratchet with the palm of your hand on the really tough ones saves you alot of strain and alot of skinned knuckles.

3.Order of methods for removing the stuck nuts and bolts
1. box wrench
2. impact wrench
3. six point socket and breaker bar
4. smoke wrench

4. Speedbleeders

5. When your just about ready to torch the thing yourself just walk away. It will be there in the morning.

6. Give it a tuneup

I like Jku's first one. It is amazing what kind of problems just sitting for a few weeks can cause.

Course I have made a few good scores from folks who have told me if you can get the piece o ****e running it's yours.

1. Always retap old parts before putting together with new parts.
2. Always carry a chain and a come-a-long with you when you snow plow.
3. don't fix it if it ain't broke
4. If some one you know knows more than you do don't be afraid to ask for advice, no matter what the subject.
5. If it looks rode hard and put up wet, it is.
6. If it sounds too good to be true, it is.
7. And salesman are NEVER making a profit on this PARTICULAR deal.

For those of you considering buying another project, look at the vehicle as it is, not what you imagine. It's cheaper to buy a semi-completed project than to start from scratch.

Here's my .02 cents:

Everyday's a Holiday (Dad)

Always keep a Map in the glovebox, Pantyhose (in case you break a belt, you dirty fools),a blank check in your wallet (you can always right a check to cover your arse), a fire extinguisher, and a can of fix a flat!

Write down the year vehicle every part for your truck comes off of. I've got a '97 s10 fuel door filler, etc., etc.

Always disconnect the battery before working on electrical!

The number 1 rule for buying parts (after the wife finds out):

It's always easier to ask for forgiveness than permission!

In some states it IS cheaper to keep her!! (from a buddy)

There ain't Nothin' that can't be fixed (with enough money), or rigged(for us poor folks)

TIP

Don't put a lot of money down on something you haven't seen in person. Some people won't return it if you decide not to buy it.

1) Take at least one picture of every vehicle you ever buy. Even if you are just going to part it out. I really wish I would have done that.
2) Buy high, sell low....You'll make it up in volume.LOL

3) If she says it's only a coldsore, don't believe it.

4) Every day is better then the next....Think about it.

5) Keep your pen out of the company ink.

6) Trust nobody!!!

7) Buy a good dictionary and use it often.

8) Never point the finger until you have all of the facts.

9) Do a good deed and don't tell anybody about it.

10) If you had a bad childhood, too damn bad. Get over it. Was it easy for any of us growing up?

Buddy up with someone that knows more than you do and/or is more skilled than you are in: body work; drivetrains; suspensions; electrical systems or anything else you may get involved with, automotive related or otherwise. Remember, wisdom is free but you must provide your own container. Offer to help someone out that is in need of help because some day you too will need help regardless of how skilled you may be.

Listen to your gut instinct when you're in a difficult situation, you'd be surprised how it's listened more carefully than you did to past experiences and even your current one.

The best works of art wren't created by staying within the lines.

Have some fun, 'cuz you only live once.
