Will 69 C10 brake backing plates bolt onto a 72 C10 rear axle?

I have a 72 5 lug rear axle for sale. It does not have backing plates. I have a potential buyer thathas a 69 with recently refurbished brakes. Has anyone done this swap?

I am going to go out and measure the mounting bolt dimensions on my other 72 C10 and have hime do the same as the loose parts I have are out at my storage place and i wont have time to go out there til Thurs.

I think the plates are the same, but don't make a deal on my word being the final word. If I am correct there will be someone back me up on this and if I am wrong I'm sure somebody will scold me for sure. Jim

I tried to look up backing plates on a few websites to see if they cross but couldn't find any listed, BUT the brake shoes hardware and wheel cylinders all list the same 67-72 c 10. Still no guarantee they bolt on the tube the same.

i seem to think that 71 72 had two different types of backing plates one regular and the heavy duty ones that were wider and required a different backin plate

I did find that the hardware for the two years is the same. Two different brake shoe sizes are listed for 72, 11"x2" and 11-3/8"x 2-3/4" (IIRC). I cant see that the mounting flange for the backing plate being different though. I am leaning toward the backing plates interchanging.

Since '72 plates will bolt onto a '66 diff'l (using approx. 3/8" spacers with '72 axles), I'd THINK they will also bolt onto all years in between. I AM THINKING, AS OTHER POSTERS ARE ALSO DOING, as just the first phrase, "'72 plates will bolt onto a '66"--is KNOWN to me.

Re: Will 69 C10 brake backing plates bolt onto a 72 C10 rear axle?

Yesterday was my first day off and i measured the 72 rear axle mounting pattern and the same on a 6 lug rear i have. They are the same. Only possible variable would be the center hole. My axle has backing plates so worse case woild be swapping shoes and adjusters etc from 69 axle to 72 axle.

Thanks everyone for the input.
