hood doesn't open

When I lift the hood release on my 71 C20, the hood does not pop up so I can get under it and lift. The guy who had it before me put a new hood on. Is it possible he forgot a spring or something that pops the hood?

Re: hood doesn't open

Try adjusting the height of the rubber stops on the radiator support, that may help.

Re: hood doesn't open

lots of times just loosening up the mounting bolts on the latch will solve that type of problem// it is also a good idea to spray the crap out of it to remove petrified grease and they a nice coating of freash grease for good operating

Re: hood doesn't open

Take a power saw and cut out the front center of the hood. Problem solved. Seriously though, the fix is most likely as cdowns suggested, or the hood hinges are done.

Re: hood doesn't open

usually an indication of worn springs. do what cdowns mentioned and, if that doesn't help, might be time for new springs. Strange thing - I had my hood hinge disconnected from the fender for a bit - when I reconnected it all back up, the hood wouldn't pop back up when released. Some fine tuning, and it actually still had enough spring in the springs to pop it.

Is your release mechanism releasing it, but it's just not popping up a bit? Or, is it not releasing at all?

Get a plastic door panel tool or a plastic glass installation tool and see if you can pry the hood up while you pull on the release handle...

Re: hood doesn't open

I had a thread going here with the same problem on my '68 C10. Turned out someone had put a '69 lower hood latch in - would not move at all with pressure pushing down while pushing on release latch, etc. because of the '68 grill style I was barely, with lots of pain, able to remove the bolts and open the hood. I used small wedge shaped pieces of wood to move hood up as far as it would go while I worked on it. look on eBay for hood latches to compare what you have with correct one for your truck. let us know how you fixed it.

Re: hood doesn't open

I would say more than likely just the latch and or pin is out of alignment. the pin on the hood should be centered going into the latch. or your hinges are kaput. Good luck!

Re: hood doesn't open

also, under surface of lower hood latch plate is a return (?) spring that sometimes breaks too. so, latch catch arm will not work properly. again, look at pictures in hood latch ads on eBay

Re: hood doesn't open

Thanks guys for all the suggestions. Lubing all the moving parts on the hinges and latch assembly did the trick. An easy fix, problem solved.

Re: hood doesn't open

I always could open it with prying it up with a screw driver. When I lifted the release, the hood did release, it just did not come up enough to get my fingers under.
