wobbly shifter column on 3 on the tree

1977 Chevrolet c10 stepside.

3 on the tree manual (which I love and do not want to replace with a floor shifter).

I have a 'wobbly' (for lack of a better word) 'shifter column' - that is: the part of the steering column that the shifter level is attached to and which rotates. I can shift gears ok, but it is not tight and there is a noticeable amount of play in it.

I think someone at some point in time took the steering column apart and maybe did not put it back together correctly; they put on an after market steering wheel.

Any ideas on what I might need to do (or parts to replace) to tighten this up? I never did anything with a steering column before.

thanks
