Glad to be back

I am finally on shore duty and have the time to pick up the hobby again. I recently purchased a 1966 GMC step side.
First question. I attached some pics of the dash. The amp gauge looks original, and i know the temp gauge to the far left isn't. What usually goes there?

Great to be here Proud to Serve!!

I didn't waste anytime.

1. Replace the starter 49.00
2. I changed the points distributor to an HEI. She cranks over with spark, but when I turn ignition to off engine keeps cranking sometimes. Possible ignitions switch? or It has an alternator with an internal regulator. The original voltage regulator is plugged in and still wired, can it continue to supply power?

Verified timing and its correct 18436572.
The engine continues to turn over even when the ignition key is off.

Firing order looks right, so that begs the question, have you hooked up a timing light to check it? Just asking because your post mentions the firing order but not the degree of timing… i.e. 4 degrees BTDC

I had a similar issue with a 283 many many moons ago and the distributor had slipped due to a loose clamp bolt...

Nice project! That's an aftermarket amps gauge. Those spaces are usually blanks on most pickups...reserved for a tach on one side, air gauge on the other...usually found in big trucks.

As for the running after off issue... is it "dieseling" or running normal?

I've heard of issues where the altenator or generator causes something to make the engine keeping running in the off position..

The starter may need to be shimmed... also, check to make sure the switch is good.

the still cranking problem can be in the starter solenoid or it is getting power to the solenoid it could be some kind of back feed or the ing. switch..... both the left temp and the amp gauges are ad-dons.... org.amp and oil was/is idiot lights in the upper holes on each side of speedo

Thank you for all your help. I took advantage of the nice weather today.
I tried again today and started to smell like rotten eggs so I stopped cranking.
Instead I removed the edelbrock 1406 carb and cleaned it out. I found a sticking needle on one side and dirty jets.

The easiest way to tell is by the connection. The interally regulated alt has a flat plug... the external more square shaped.

You'll find it next to the horn relay on the driver side of the core support. 3 bolts and a plug....5min job to swap. Be sure to unhook the battery and install the ground 1st prior to hooking up the positive. I learned the hard way twice a few years back when I kept frying them new out of the box.

when you install a hei are you not supposed to remove the wire from the starter to the distributor. that was the 12 volt wire for the extra juice when starting. the wire from the ign switch to the coil was 9 volts(resistor wire) that should be removed and a non resisted wire installed so that there is 12 volts all of the time. sounds that the wire is still there and you have it hooked up so that it is hot to the starter somehow and is keeping the starter engaged??? remove that wire.

I disconnected the purple wire (S terminal) going to the cab and went straight to the battery.
The positive battery terminal gets super hot. The starter solenoid is either getting stuck or its back feeding.

Is the original voltage regulator still wired for the original external alternator?

Are the tach and vacuum gauges the originals?

Looks like the starter solenoid was sticking keeping the starter engaged. I charged the battery and it fired up.
