Pigpen's '71

My name is Pigpen, and I am a VW guy venturing into trucks..
Here are a couple busses I built recently..

This is my first C10, and I'm pretty pumped about it.. I did have a 68 Burb for a little bit that I sold to a good friend in Vegas.. He's been killing it..
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=403690

So I bought this truck in Pahrump, NV last Sunday.. It is an ugly rusty crusty 71. Stock front disc brakes, 350 with turbo 350 transmission, posi, leaf spring rear end, etc.. When I got to Pahrump to pick it up, it wouldn't even idle.. I figured the carb was dirty, and it just needed to be ran. I put a full tank of premium in, and drove to Vegas.. By time I got there, it was idleing and seemingly running fine..

I got to my Mom's house in Vegas, and parked the truck Sunday night. Thursday, we decided we were gonna leave Vegas and head home to Colorado. About 8am, I go out to start the truck, and the dang thing wouldn't fire.. Had fuel, and was turning, but no spark.. UUUGGGHHHH.. Of course I have no tools and no help, and my mom's neighborhood has strict rules about working on your cars in the street, so I have it towed to my buddy's friend's shop..

Ends up that the ignition was screwed.. Distributer, cap, and rotor were toast, and the coil was nasty.. Bummer.. I wanted to be in CO by sundown, and now by time the truck is fixed, and we're on the road, it's 6pm.. Only running 9 hours behind. Now I get to drive a 42 year old truck that I know no history on 500 miles home in the middle of the night.. Oh yea, and my wife and 2 kids are in the car following me.. That's love..

80 miles North on I 15, in Mequite, NV

Beaver, UT

Salinas, UT

One more stop in Crescent Jctn, UT, but no pics.. I had to pee so bad, I forgot to take a picture..

Home safe in Grand Junction, CO.

The truck did really good.. I'm proud of the Turd.. Ran hard the whole way with no issues.. Got about 12 MPH.. Seems a little low, but I made it home, so I didn't care..

Now comes the fun. I get to fix it all.. Plans are to restore it.. Like I said before, I've never done a C10, so I have lots of questions.. It needs quite a bit of rust repair, so I found these guys on a quick search..
http://www.dreamershotrods.com/6772c...tionparts.aspx
Anybody have any info on these guys? How is there sheet metal quality? The prices are great.. I think I want to get it solid again first.. I'm the kind of guy who does the crappy stuff first, and reward myself with the fun stuff..

Thanks for having the attention span to read this far Any help will be greatly appreciated..

That is quite an adventure for your first truck..... Sounds like something I would do. Welcome to the board.

Welcome to the 67-72 C-10 world Kev! I'm glad you made it back safe, and figured since I didn't get a call, all was good. Good seeing you and the family over the holiday.

You only teased everybody with those two VW pics, just a small glimpse of your skills. Now I have to get off my ass and finish the burb, because I know you'll go night and day on that truck, and finish it before I know it.

Re: Pigpen's '71

Welcome and good luck with your new truck. Great looking double cab! I had a 62 double cab for years. Sold it awhile back (regret it). I had so many questions about it when I would drive it. Most people thought it was something I customized. I guess they are so rare that most just did not even know VW made them.

Re: Pigpen's '71

First of all... GO CHARGERS!!!

Second, thanks everyone.. Not used to forums where people are welcoming and nice.. LOL

I scored on some parts today.. Searching CL, I found a guy selling some goodies..

http://westslope.craigslist.org/cto/4200493164.html

I bought the 2 fenders, rocker and body mount.. $100 for all.. Not too shabby.. No rust either, which is way better than what I have now.. Now I need to find some bed sides.. I was gonna make this truck a SWB, but after some serious thought, I'm gonna leave it LWB.. I'm probably gonna logo it, maybe a fauxtina paint job.. Dunno.. I'm getting ahead of myself.. MUST RUST REPAIR FIRST...

Re: Pigpen's '71

I am ready to order some sheet metal for this pig, but need some opinions first.. I don't know who sells better quality panels.. I was gonna order from Dreamers, but decided to look at LMC to check prices and availability.. Everything looks comparable on the moniter, which makes me wonder if they sell the exact same stuff and put their own labels on it, or if one is better than the other?

Any knowledge guys?

Re: Pigpen's '71

Hi RustyVolks. I'm not sure that one is better than the other but what I'm sure about is the number of complaints of receiving damaged parts from the shipping as well as the expense. I would try to find used original panels locally whenever possible. Just my .02 cents:-)

I agree on original panels, but easier said than done..

I guess I'll be patient, and see what comes my way
