Drove truck went to start back up and wouldn't

I went to start the truck "turned over fine" but then when I had drove it to a neighbors the truck wouldn't start back up.We charged it and it did fine and then cut off again.I know the Plugs, wires and Generator are all good I am thinking it is the Voltage regulator because of it still being the original one that came out of the Factory. The carb is slowly leaking gas at the housing but as far as I know it was re-built

Its been doing wonderful before all of this

Sorta confused on all of this

Sounds like the carb is flooding. A piece of dirt can get in the needle & seat & cause a flooding condition regardless when the carb is new or rebuilt.

Re: Drove truck went to start back up and wouldn't

VR usually is a go-no go deal, very seldom intermittent. Check for spark at the plug (get a pair of insulated pliers and hold the plug wire about 1/4" from the plub, should get a good blue-white spark when engine is turning, if you have gas leaking onto the engine have a fire extinguisher handy). If that is good try starting the engine with the choke OPEN to compensate for the flooding. Also check to make sure the fuel pump is delivering fuel all of the time, if it has sat for a while, or been cranking without fuel in the pump, it might be failing (diaphram breaking up). If you are still running the temp "gas tank" and it is sucking air periodically that is hard on fuel pumps too. Another possibility is that the accelerator pump is going bad (notorius problem on the two bbl carbs) and not delivering the gas "shot" needed to start. Look down the carb while giving the throttle a good jab with the choke open and see if gas squirts out of the port on the inside of the venturi.

I'm betting that you didn't polarize the generator when you replaced it! The generator won't charge unless it's done right.

I don't see how it could "turn over fine" if the battery was bad.

Re: Drove truck went to start back up and wouldn't

make sure the ground wire for the battery is tight on both ends. I hope you diagnosed the bad battery before just putting in a new one! chances are slim that you started it fine, drove to a neighbors house, and then the battery went bad. seems more likely that a connection was loose

I went through a similar thing, except I jumped my truck and it died again after driving two blocks away and it woundnt crank. that's when I tightened up the ground wire and its been fine ever since

You may have shook wires lose the same time you shook the hood emblem out and ran over it.

Re: Drove truck went to start back up and wouldn't

Since its beyond cold I'll debate going outside to fiddle with it..I am going to re-tighten the Generators wiring etc.It ran good today, fixed the high idle.I took the Negative post off to make sure it wouldn't drain.I hate THIS COLD !!!

We have a local generator rebuilder that does everything to it before giving it back to me

Re: Drove truck went to start back up and wouldn't

You still need to polarize the voltage regulator.

Re: Drove truck went to start back up and wouldn't

So that explains the "Red Light" on the Dash, I thought that was supposed to be there..I read all of it, but still don't know how I could polarize it myself

The first two things I'm going to get is

Front Bed Panel
Transmission Cover

Re: Drove truck went to start back up and wouldn't

I'd recommend an owners manual (repops are available) and good vintage chiltons from the 50's. Lots of truck specific information and hundreds of pages on how the systems work and how to diagose them. Hopefully you did not hurt the generator and it was just not charging.

Re: Drove truck went to start back up and wouldn't

Orrie's right, quit spending your money on games for your Xbox and get you some repair manuals! Go to the Library and find a Chiltons for your truck and check it out. I know you don't have the money to have a shop fix the small things that you could actually do. Let's get this truck on the road and lets do it ONCE not keep fixing things because "WE " didn't do it right the first time.

Figured out how to do it by watching a How to video.Does anyone have a Diagram for the Original Voltage Regulator...I gotta make sure not to touch the F....and oh indian I don't own a "Xbox", I own a "PS3"

The V-R is the Original one so I believe its a Acdelco...I looked at the link but I didn't see the Acdelco one?.....

Re: Drove truck went to start back up and wouldn't

So basically all I do is find the right terminal and just touch it to make it spark and BAM im done ?

Nevermind I surfed the internet and found some reliable source

For a voltage regulator, touch "BATT" to "GEN" (or ARM") and do not touch "FLD" (or F) terminal.

Regardless if a generator has a cut-out or a voltage regulator, whenever the generator is removed and then reinstalled it should always be polarized to the battery. The Delco-Remy electrical manual recommends doing this when the battery is changed as well. I never have when I changed a battery but I have always re polarized the generator after removing it for any reason.

Re: Drove truck went to start back up and wouldn't

It produced a spark but could it be, that the battery posts weren't tight enough? its possible I think.I'm going to re-tighten them tomorrow

Once it did, I checked the gauge and the red light was still there
