I would say yes. The valve body wiring looks to have a pressure switch. I would guess it's meant to prevent lockup in anything but fourth. This is not how the factory wiring is done. The brake switch wiring powers the lockup solenoid and unlocks the converter if step on the brake pedal.

Re: Questions about 700r4 lock up converter.
I am guessing you could use both of those kits. With the internal kit just supply 12v ignition power and it will only lock up in high gear. With the brake switch you could interrupt the 12v power going to the trani when the brakes are applied. I am in the process of helping a couple of buddies install two 700r4 trani's in a couple of hot rod trucks. The trani guy said just give the trani 12 v ignition power and we are done. I should know this we how the first one will work. Also here's a web site to check out. It explains on how to adjust the tv cable. Tvmadeez.com/article/index.php

Yes you must use both kits. Were there no instructions? You will also need to have the correct carb bracket and tv cable adjustments!

Thank you for your answers:
I already installed the exterior wiring and tomorrow when I'll drive the truck , I expect to see the difference, tomorrow will change the interior kit, I was using the transmission for about 10k since was swaped 3 years ago, and I have the carb bracket . Thanks |

Re: Questions about 700r4 lock up converter.
Don't buy those over priced lock up kits (solenoid and brake switch). All you have to do is put a switched power to the positive and ground the negative. Once your fourth gear kicks in, you can flip the power and it will lock up the converter driving the RPM's down. Installing those lock up kits (solenoid and brake switch) will make riding around town feels like #$#% because you will have no power and not to mention engine knocking. Yes it is a little inconvenient with the manual switch but only costs about 4 dollars from Radio Shack. The only time you want to lock up the torque is when you are doing freeway driving anyways. The reason why I said those are overpriced because most of the 700r4 comes with the solenoid inside. You can test it by putting power to the wiring and listen for the clicks. Beats dropping the pan and replacing something your tranny already came with.
Now if you really want to have the way the factory has intended. The only kit I can recommend is http://www.streetsideauto.com/p/bm-7...FdHm7Aod3R4AJw It does the same thing as putting a positive switch to the solenoid however you can tune it via the speedometer signal by telling it when to turn on and off. There is another kit similar to the above (B&M) by Ron Francis but it is a little more and doesn't offer as much adjustability. I have tried all different kits....the only way I can recommend you is the B&M. You will thank me later. Last edited by tinsoldier; 01-23-2014 at 09:39 AM. |

tinsoldier - the B&M kit says it is only good for 1991 and older - anything for '92 and later?

Re: Questions about 700r4 lock up converter.
The 700r4 stops production around 93. The 1992 has the round plug but still uses the same function as the square plug but couple of more wires. You just have to find which wire is the positive and which one is the negative on the plug if you have the existing round plug. Ron Francis makes one with the round plug. http://www.ronfrancis.com/prodinfo.asp?number=TC-71
Besides, finding a 700r4 with a round plug is very rare as it only only a 1 year and mostly in corvette or firebirds that are equipped with LT1 engines. Last edited by tinsoldier; 01-23-2014 at 01:10 PM. |
