Rear axle swap - what years are interchangable?

1983 C10, 1/2-ton, 2wd, short bed

Ring and pinion broke. As far as I can tell it's the original axle. Trying to decide whether to swap the entire axle or have it rebuilt.

Can an axle off a newer truck be used? What years?

One with disc brakes? Any extra parts (brake proportioning valve, etc.) needed for the change to disc?
