Dealer step bumpers

well, I found a solution that has worked really well. I'm not at the shop but will take pics and post in a few days. While checking to see what I may have that could work, I remembered that a few months into my "just painting the bumper and fixing a small leak" weekend project (about 3.5 years ago), I was hastily installing a new windshield and sliced the rubber up pretty bad (and we won't talk about the number of windshields were cracked! ... just a note, read the forums because it's either the top or bottom that goes in first, NO matter how many times I say it goes in!!!). So basically, I just trimmed off a portion of one side of the windshield rubber and installed it. It was a pita at first because I hadn't taken enough off, but it's in now, fits nice and snug and looks great. A bit taller than the one that was there, although hardly noticeable.

btw, anybody in the market for NEW cracked windshield(s)??

Hey guys, just found this thread, thought I'd post a few pic of my Braden step bumper. I actually had to modify this short bed stepside bumper to fit my long step bed. You will find a link in my signature on how I modified it. I ended up using left over fender welting to act as a seal to prevent scratching between the bumper warp around sections & the fenders. I just glued the welting to the underside of the bumper, it has worked out very well and ties in well with the fender welting so everything looks consistent. I know the welting is not what would have been used originally but it does work.

I have a step bumper on my '64 long bed fleetside. Probably a fremont truck...sold at a dealer here in Oregon.

Not the greatest photo, and not up to date, but my 64 has the step style with the twin plate clevis AND ball hitch. Can't find a dealer name on it, I might look a little harder today.

Does anyone know how they attached the bumper to the fenders without destroying the paint? When I took it apart they were just bolted directly to the fenders. Are there pads that go between them?

Yes, there is rubber "welting" that goes in between the fender and the bumper. However, it isn't reproduced, so, you will have to experiment with rubber gasket material and cut your own.

I used 3/16" rubber fender welting around the fender and cut a rubber cork for a spacer.

I think it's more the nostalgia thing, not advertisement. Besides, most of them I have seen, the dealer has long since closed.

Sold new without a bumper, but after camper was purchased, a special slide out rear bumper was installed. It is adjustable from flush with bed to about 2 feet out. I keep it out at 6", but would feel better at 1 foot out for better rear end collision protection

Here's mine. I used a red paint pen for the letters and dropped tiny glass beads in the painted letters before the paint dried. Now the letters are red and reflective.

That's a sweet idea! Where did you get the beads?

Bought the beads on eBay. Super cheap and you get a ton. The same beads as used in highway striping for reflective qualities.

Heres a steel step bumper from my 66 C-10 that came from Crabtree Chevrolet Company in Glenrose, Texas. I need to clean it up but its survived almost 50 years.
