Lic plate flip-out

66 GMC Suburban - the entire rear licence plate mount is hinged and flips up, the plate itself is mounted to it with it's own spring-hinged mount. Anyone have more info on what purpose this design served?

Cool feature, I never knew that was there. Was it on GMC and Chevys?

James Bond also uses it on his Burb to reveal a hidden plate to throw of the London " Bobby's"

Re: Lic plate flip-out

Only thing I can figure is easy license light bulb change? I eliminated the rattling of it by drilling through the tailgate, running 2 carriage bolts with chrome acorn nuts. They keep everything nice and tight, and looks good too.

Re: Lic plate flip-out

I really have no idea. Looking at the holes it appears that the plate was on the door and the hinged part was combo plate & flip up utility or backup light?

I think RockTonka is correct that the "license place is visible with gate down" but either way it does certainly make it easy to change license light bulb............. now you gotta post a pick of your plate after describing your setup

Re: Lic plate flip-out

this design had carried forward from earlier generations of Suburban carryalls, as well as the car wagons. ( I had a 51 Chevy "tin woodie" with a similar plate holder), and probably other vehicles before that.....probably other car makers, as well.

Re: Lic plate flip-out

You beat me too it !!

I found this out the hard way, well almost.

I was trailering my 62 to my shop. I went to bungee the hatch closed from the light frame to the drip rail, when ..... snap ! Plate flips up, and off comes bungee ...
