one piece driveshaft
I want to go to a 1 piece driveshaft, but my 400 transmission only has 3 inches of splined shaft, the old 2 piece driveshaft only had 2" or so of splines at the yolk, but I dont think it slipped very much at the transmission, mostly at the carrier bearing area. I need to get a yolk that is fully splined, but if I do that will the tailshaft with only 3" of splines hold up.

Put the correct splined yoke in the tailshaft. Look at the spline so you can tell how much of it normally stays in place, in the tailshaft. From the center of the yoke, i.e., where the universal joint is placed, measure to the center of the rear yoke on the differential. You'll probably need help doing that.
The distance between these two yoke centers, is the length of drive shaft that you need. You don't want your yoke to be all the way in the tailshaft. It has to slip some. If it is too far into the tail housing, you'll run the risk of doing untold damage to your tranny, and others stuff.
