Trans fluid on my feet...
My wife drove my truck today, when she got home she parked a bit close to my sons car so I went to move it over a bit and found trans fluid dripping from under the dash.
I assume its from the speedo cable, but why? How do I stop it? Its a 700r4 and the original speedo cable. Thanks! P.S. I tried the search but apparently cant find the right search words to get the answer.

Re: Trans fluid on my feet...
your speedo cable may be in backwards ...have you done any work on it lately . could also be from a vacuum line under the dash from a bad modulator valve leaking into the vacuum line . most of the time the motor will start smoking .

Re: Trans fluid on my feet...
Last speedo cable work was 11 years ago...and then it was not taken off, just unhooked from the Saginaw and attached to the 700r4.
The only vacuum lines on the truck that I know of are on the charcoal canister and the distributor. Is there a seal in the speedo cable that somehow could have worn out over the last 42 years?

Re: Trans fluid on my feet...
yes I would look at the speedo cable its self at the trans, it should be a little wet there also. take it loose and see if it drips from that area. it could climb the cable .
I am not sure if the 700r4 was a vacuum shift , the th350 and 400 were. |

Re: Trans fluid on my feet...
Sounds like oil rather than trans fluid. The oil pressure line on the back of the instrument cluster is most likely.
You're not gonna get ATF traveling all the way up the cable and into the cab.

Re: Trans fluid on my feet...
Yes, I doubt very seriously you would get ATF that far up the speedo. It would be more likely the oil gauge line on the right bottom side of cluster leaking.

Re: Trans fluid on my feet...
I will check the oil line.
When I wiped the liquid off the floor mat it was red on the paper towel, the drips were on the floor right under the parking brake pedal. My oil pressure gage is on the right side of the cluster. Didn't have time to climb under the dash to see for sure but will today. Thanks for the replies.

Re: Trans fluid on my feet...
If it is trans fluid pull the speedo cable off the adapter in the trans. If you find fluid pull the adapter out of the transmission and take it apart.( I believe it just has a c clip holding the shaft in) There is one or two o rings that seal the shaft to the housing and have probably gone bad. Just replace them and you should beegood to go.

Re: Trans fluid on my feet...
Well....I figured out what it was.
Apparently one of my kids left a candy cane on the dash. With the fluctuating temps lately coupled with my not driving the truck much due to salt on the road, there was enough condensation to melt the candy cane. So it was melted candy cane dripping down through the dash to the floor. After only 30 minutes or so, I had it all cleaned up.

It might be one of the kids left a candy cane on the dash and it melted to the floor, check that out... Ohh, I'm sorry, I posted too late, you already figured it out...

Re: Trans fluid on my feet...
But wouldn't some candy residue be left inside the dash? THAT'S HOW WE GET ANTS LAUNA! (Any "Archer" fans here?)

Re: Trans fluid on my feet...
On the paper towel it was amazing how much it looked like ATF, I am pretty glad it was candy and not some kind of leak.
I did sniff it the other day when I found it, but this time of year my alergies throw my smeller off, guess I shoukd have tasted it.
