Painting a new crate motor

.

Has anyone here painted a new black 350 crate motor?
I am about ready to install my new crate motor (Thanks, JEG'S). I am not crazy about a black motor and I'm thinking Chevy Orange. Do I need to "scuff" the factory paint or simply tape and spray?

Yes, scuff, everything - and clean thoroughly.

Definitely scuff it. You want that paint to stick.

Scuff... grind down all of the casting texture, smooth the corners, blend the block and heads, hit it with a DA and make that baby shine. Then cover it in paint.

No sane people do this much prep, not even on high end roadster builds. I do and the results are awesome. Makes the color brighter and is much easier to clean.
