Are all square body throttle pedals stiff?

My new to me 84 and 85 both have stiff throttle pedals. They both have the little pigtail loop from firewall to bracket. They have a breaking point that once u get over it's easier but they both are really stiff compared to everything I remember driving. I'll probably buy a new cable and see if that changes anything but I was gonna ask on here 1st.

Re: Are all square body throttle pedals stiff?

Mine was really stiff. I put an aftermarket universal cable on there and it was a lot lighter, but it broke, so I just bought a new stock one. Still pretty stiff. It seems way too long for the setup I have, so it takes a pretty tight loop between firewall and carb.

Re: Are all square body throttle pedals stiff?

I had an 87 and now have an 84. I do not notice a stiff pedal.

Re: Are all square body throttle pedals stiff?

The return spring on the throttle on the carb can be small and cause the pedal to be a bit stiff.

Re: Are all square body throttle pedals stiff?

Especially if the PO used whatever spring they could find instead of the proper throttle return spring.

What's the little "pigtail loop" you speak of? (mine may have it, but it's 4 am., don't think I'm gonna look now.) Seems you'd want the cable to be kink free.

Pop the cable off the carb, if it's still binding, it's the cable. If not look at the spring or worse case, throttle shaft bushings.

I'm kinda like duct tape- no real purpose, but handy to have around.

Re: Are all square body throttle pedals stiff?

Use a double coil spring. Use WD40 on the carb linkages only when it's cold. Spraying a little down into the cable don't hurt either. When mine starts to get tight, I use a little WD40.

Nope.

My throttle pedal has never been stiff.

Re: Are all square body throttle pedals stiff?

I bought a cable from lmc and it was really stiff. Bought one from GM and problem was solved. Make sure its routed the correct way too. That can cause it to bind. The cable needs to loop down right when it gets into engine bay.

Re: Are all square body throttle pedals stiff?

Could be two things worn or stiff throttle cable or your return springs on your carb are too heavy ... I like my go lever nice and hard keeps me out of trouble that way

Re: Are all square body throttle pedals stiff?

the springs not stiff. i can leave it off and the pedal is still stiff.

it's a little difficult cause u have to push hard until u get past a point then u spin your tires. so it doesn't help avoiding tickets

Re: Are all square body throttle pedals stiff?

the cables get a groove worn inside, that makes it stiff. hard to find a good cable anymore. the parts store ones around here don't even fit the pedal.
